Lena Dunham, Carly Rae Jepsen join ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ Broadway musical
A 1999 rom-com favorite is headed to Broadway as a musical — with Lena Dunham and Carly Rae Jepsen helping make it happen.
Fans of the 1999 teen rom-com are getting a stage version: a new musical of 10 Things I Hate About You is headed to Broadway, with preview performances set to begin August 17, 2027 . The show adapts the film that made Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger household names, reimagined by a pop-forward and TV-to-stage creative team.
Previews begin August 17, 2027, on Broadway.
Who’s making it
- Lena Dunham and Jessica Huang — book
- Carly Rae Jepsen and Ethan Gruska — music and lyrics
- Tom Kitt — music supervision, arrangements, orchestrations
- Christopher Wheeldon — director and choreographer
- Mike Bosner — producer
The production is described as a “rebellious” coming-of-age musical about self-discovery and pushing back on social rules. At its center are two sisters trying to define themselves on their own terms amid high school cliques, crushes and chaos — a fresh spin that aims to channel the movie ’s sharp wit into a new score and staging.
From film to stage
Based on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, the movie followed the Stratford sisters and a scheme that pairs the school’s fiercest skeptic of dating with its most enigmatic rebel. The original cast included:
- Julia Stiles — Kat Stratford
- Heath Ledger — Patrick Verona
- Larisa Oleynik — Bianca Stratford
- Joseph Gordon-Levitt — Cameron
It also delivered one of the era’s most indelible set pieces: Patrick’s stadium serenade of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” a moment that practically begged for a musical reinterpretation.
Broadway venue, casting and opening night have not yet been announced.
