Kim Cattrall Missed Out on a Major ‘Coronation Street’ Cameo
Kim Cattrall nearly joined the legendary cast of Coronation Street, but scheduling conflicts forced her to decline. She remains hopeful for another chance to appear on the iconic British soap.
Hollywood is full of what-ifs, but few are as surprising as Kim Cattrall’s missed shot at joining the cast of Coronation Street. While many fans know her best as Samantha Jones from Sex and the City, Cattrall was once offered a role on the long-running British soap. The idea of her lighting up the screen in Weatherfield is enough to spark anyone’s imagination, but it wasn’t meant to be—at least, not yet.
Turning Down the Iconic Soap
Back in 2016, Cattrall revealed on Good Morning Britain that she had to pass on the opportunity due to a packed schedule.
“Maybe they’ll ask me again,”
she said, leaving the door open for a future appearance. It’s hard not to picture her bringing her signature charisma and bold personality to the show, even if she wouldn’t be reprising her famous role as Samantha. The producers surely would have crafted a memorable character just for her.
Coronation Street has a history of welcoming big names for special appearances. Over the years, everyone from Prince Charles to Mel B has popped up on the cobblestone streets. In 2005, Sir Ian McKellen played a shady novelist for a ten-episode arc, and even Bob Dylan was offered a cameo in 2022. Cattrall would have been in good company among these celebrity guests.
British Roots and Soap Dreams
Though she’s often associated with New York City, Cattrall was actually born in Mossley Hill, Liverpool, just about 30 miles from where the show is set. That local connection could have given her a chance to play a character with roots close to her own. Coronation Street, set in Manchester, has featured a few Liverpudlian characters over its 65-year run, so it wouldn’t have been out of place.
Cattrall even joked about pulling pints at the show’s famous pub, the Rover’s Return. It’s easy to imagine her as a glamorous, outspoken bartender, stirring up drama and maybe even getting involved in a scandal or two. Despite the perfect fit, a cameo still hasn’t happened, even a decade after the initial offer.
Familiar Face in British Media
Appearing on Coronation Street wouldn’t have been Cattrall’s first foray into British entertainment. She’s starred in several UK productions, including the BBC miniseries Witness for the Protection and the Sky Arts short Ruby Robinson. She’s also made a guest appearance as herself on BBC Radio 4’s Women’s Hour.
With her recent marriage to a Brit and more time spent in the UK, there’s still hope that Cattrall might one day walk onto the set of one of Britain’s most beloved soaps. For now, fans can only imagine what could have been—and maybe, just maybe, what still might be.
