Kevin Feige’s “biggest failure”? Mahershala Ali says Marvel rejected a Blade movie

Mahershala Ali says he spent more than a year in intensive physical prep and sword work for Blade — a movie that never shot a frame. In a new GQ chat, the two-time Oscar winner sounds genuinely baffled that Marvel couldn’t get the reboot off the ground after it was announced and hyped, despite him being under contract and ready to go.

“To this day, I don’t know why it didn’t happen. I just know that it was—Kevin, he said it was the biggest failure of his career and I agree”.

Earlier this year on the podcast Happy Sad Confused, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige said he felt like a “gigantic loser and failure” for not making the reboot happen. Ali now publicly agrees with that assessment, adding that with Marvel’s resources — including a bankable lead who’d already cleared his schedule — it shouldn’t have been so hard.

Ali first pitched his take right after winning his second Oscar in 2019, and Marvel made it official at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. He envisioned a version with cultural impact on the level of Black Panther. He’s also said he was against announcing it so early — a splashy reveal that backfired when the script kept changing and the movie stalled.

Through the stops and starts, Ali kept training anyway. He told GQ earlier this year he’d officially moved on, arguing the movie would have been made if Marvel had truly committed to it with the time and money it routinely marshals elsewhere.

As of now, Blade isn’t dated — it’s off Disney’s schedule with no new release plan announced.
