John Rambo Returns: Sisu Director Sets Prequel for Summer 2027
Noah Centineo is locked and loaded as John Rambo sets its release date.
Rambo is coming back, just... younger. Lionsgate has locked in a date for the prequel 'John Rambo' — first teased at Cannes last year — and it is officially charging into theaters on June 4, 2027.
Where this lands in the franchise
This is the sixth Rambo movie overall. The whole thing started with 'First Blood' in 1982, then kept going with 'Rambo: First Blood Part II', 'Rambo III', 'Rambo' (2008), and 'Rambo: Last Blood' in 2019. Now we are rewinding the clock to before all of that.
The setup
The prequel follows John Rambo in his early years, before the events of 'First Blood'. The story tracks him as a Green Beret fighting through the rainforests of Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. Jalmari Helander — the Finnish filmmaker behind 'Sisu ' — is directing, which strongly suggests the action is going to be mean, sweaty, and practical. Different era, same guy with a lot of scars incoming.
Release date and the summer pileup
Lionsgate, which picked up the rights to future Rambo films, is dropping this one into a very busy slot. It opens June 4, 2027, right between Disney 's 'Star Wars: Starfighter ' on May 28 and Warner Bros. ' upcoming 'Ocean's' prequel on June 25. Translation: Rambo will not be the only one throwing punches that month — the box office will be, too.
Production status
Filming kicked off earlier this year in Thailand and wrapped in March. So yes, this train is already moving; now we wait to see what the tone looks like when marketing starts.
Cast
- Noah Centineo as John Rambo — taking over the role Stallone built into an icon.
- David Harbour as Sam Trautman — the commanding officer played by Richard Crenna in the original films.
- Thomas Pang as Yao — details on the character are under wraps for now; you might know Pang from the Oscar- nominated 'Sinners '.
- Also appearing: Jason Tobin, Quincy Isaiah, Jefferson White, and Tayme Thapthimthong.
- James Franco is in the mix, role undisclosed.
Why this could be interesting
Handing Rambo to a new lead is a high-wire act, but Centineo has the physicality and Helander knows how to make bone-crunching action play on a budget. If they nail the character's early psychology and keep the combat grounded, this could actually work. If not, well... the shadow of Stallone is huge.
Either way, Rambo is back in theaters June 4, 2027. See you in the jungle.
