Jack Schlossberg Reveals How His Mom Caroline Really Felt About the Love Story Depiction
Caroline Kennedy and son Jack Schlossberg watched only a snippet of FX’s Love Story riffing on their family—and it left them in stitches, he revealed on Katie Couric’s Next Question podcast, recalling that the actor on screen was freaking out.
Caroline Kennedy tried watching FX's 'Love Story' with her son, Jack Schlossberg, and they barely made it through a single scene. Not out of outrage. Out of laughter.
They watched one clip and lost it
On the Wednesday, April 15 episode of Katie Couric's 'Next Question' podcast, Jack, 33, said he queued up a moment where an actor is playing his mom. The performance swung so big that the two of them just cracked up. He also wants anyone tuning in to remember: this series might be inspired by his family, but it's still fiction, full stop.
What the show actually covers
'Love Story' centers on John F. Kennedy Jr. falling for Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and follows the relationship right up to the 1999 plane crash that killed them both. The casting:
- Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr.
- Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette Kennedy
- Grace Gummer as Caroline Kennedy
- Ben Shenkman as Edwin Schlossberg
Jack's take: admire the icon, question the angle
Jack is not dunking on people who liked the show. In fact, he gets the appeal. His uncle was, in his words, legitimately cool — the kind of person who made people want to copy his style and vibe. Where Jack bristles is the framing. He thinks the series leans too hard on the soap and not nearly enough on the substance: his family are public servants, and JFK Jr. was a serious person with serious work, not just a tabloid romance.
'Whatever, who cares. [It was a] stupid show.'
The plaid complaint (and some family context)
Jack also flagged one detail that made him roll his eyes: the show sticks his dad, Edwin Schlossberg, in a plaid getup. Jack says his father — whom he calls the most stylish guy he has ever met — would never. For the record: Jack is the son of Caroline, 68, and Edwin, 80. They also share daughters Rose, 37, and Tatiana.
What the producers say they were going for
Ryan Murphy produced 'Love Story,' which draws from Elizabeth Beller's biography of JFK Jr. and Carolyn. Executive producer Brad Simpson said in February that they used Beller's book as a guide and, because the couple died so young, had to rely on accounts from people around them. According to Simpson, that was enough to map out the marriage's rough patches and bright spots — the problems, the tensions, the highs, the lows — even if recreating certain moments was a challenge.
