Looking to stream Gone With the Wind? Here are the platforms hosting it now, what it costs, and the quickest way to watch tonight.

Here we go again: one of Hollywood 's most famous epics is back in the spotlight, not just because it still stirs arguments, but because it finally has a firm date for a 4K upgrade. And yes, that recent Netflix flap actually happened.

First, a quick refresher

'Gone With the Wind' hit theaters in 1939, directed by Victor Fleming and adapted from Margaret Mitchell's 1936 novel. The film follows Scarlett O'Hara, a Southern belle scrambling to keep her family plantation, Tara, afloat through the Civil War and Reconstruction while juggling a messy love life. It became a box office monster over multiple releases, with total grosses commonly pegged in the neighborhood of $3.4 billion to $4.5 billion when those reissues are tallied.

It cleaned up at the Oscars: eight wins, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Vivien Leigh took Best Actress, and Hattie McDaniel made history as the first African American Academy Award winner with Best Supporting Actress. In 1989, it was among the first 25 films added to the United States National Film Registry.

So where can you watch it right now?

Not on Netflix, and not on the other big subscription streamers either. If you want to watch it today, it is available to rent digitally on Amazon and Apple TV.

About that Netflix dust-up

The movie briefly drew fresh attention when users flagged the way it was described on Netflix. The wording was blunt enough to go viral, and Elon Musk was one of the folks who took a swing at it. The text that sparked the backlash read:

'A 1939 American Civil War epic known for its racism. To learn more about Black lives in America, search 'Black Lives Matter'.'

After the complaints, Netflix removed that description. The title also is not on Netflix's July lineup now.

4K release incoming

Warner is giving the film a proper 4K rollout this fall, pairing a digital release with new 4K UHD Blu-ray editions and a batch of fresh extras. If you have been waiting to see the movie in true 4K resolution, this is the first time.

  • Release date and formats: November 3, 2026, in 4K Ultra HD digitally and on 4K UHD Blu-ray.
  • Physical editions: a standard 4K UHD, a SteelBook, and a Walmart-exclusive collector's edition.
  • Preorders: the Walmart-exclusive opened for pre-order on July 14, 2026, via Walmart's official site.
  • New bonus features: 'Gone With the Wind: The Influence That Endures' (on the film's impact), 'Gone With the Wind: Restoring and Preserving an Epic' (on the picture and sound restoration work), and 'Scarlett O'Hara: A Woman Ahead of Her Time' (on the central performance).
