Is False Memory on Netflix? Here’s where to watch the buzzy new anime

Instead of turning up on Netflix, the Chinese animated series False Memory launched with a split release: it premiered August 2, 2026 exclusively on Bilibili in China, while international viewers can watch it free on YouTube via the official Made by Bilibili channel. No subscription is required. The show is produced by Flint Sugar and Studio Tumble.

Also known by its original title Memory Management Bureau, the series debuted with its first episodes already live on those platforms. Early chatter has zeroed in on the rollout itself, which may be slowing discovery outside China.

The premise

False Memory follows Guan Chao, a young man determined to undo a personal loss by chasing a mysterious power source known as the Burning Stone. His quest drops him inside the Memory Management Bureau, an organization tasked with repairing corrupted memories.

Working alongside memory administrators Fang Tang and Bai Zhong, Guan Chao dives through layered memory worlds to capture dangerous “Bug” entities that threaten reality itself. The story leans into grief, memory, and healing while building out a sci‑fi mystery.

Who’s behind it

The series expands on an award-winning 2020 independent short film, retaining its striking visual identity while scaling up the action and worldbuilding. It’s directed by Li Shuyu and BlackLine.
