Invincible ends its season 4 run on Amazon Prime Video with a universe-rending bloodbath as Mark and Conquest pummel each other to the brink — but it’s one game-changing detail from the episode that’s setting off the loudest debate.

Invincible just dropped an episode that ends in a full-on bloodbath: Mark vs. Conquest, bodies and buildings getting turned into paste. Brutal. But the thing fans are buzzing about isn’t only the gore. It ’s the surprise arrival of Tech Jacket… with a twist.

Tech Jacket is back, but not as you remember

The show pulls in Tech Jacket, the Image Comics hero Robert Kirkman created, to help in the Viltrumite War. In the comics, that character is Zack Thompson. On the show, it’s Zoey Thompson. Yep, they gender-swapped the armored ally.

Kirkman told Den of Geek the change wasn’t just a stunt. The short version: a straight-from-the-comics Zack would feel a little too close to Mark Grayson. So they flipped the character and rebuilt from there.

"We decided early on that it would be interesting to gender swap this character. We started thinking about who Zoe would be instead of Zach. There are some exciting things that come up when you change that character."

Zoey Deutch brings the suit to life

Zoey Deutch voices Zoey Thompson, and Kirkman says her energy gives Tech Jacket a different charge than the comics version ever had. Showrunner Simon Racioppa backed that up, noting Deutch showed up already dialed in on who the character is, plays the humor, nails the one-liners, and basically does the thing you want from a big, fun sci-fi hero. They sound genuinely thrilled they cast her.

Where the season stands (and why this matters now)

Quick reality check, because the episode’s ending makes it feel like a finale: it isn’t. We’re just past the halfway mark of season 4, and the Viltrumite War is only heating up. Here’s the lay of the land after that Mark/Conquest throwdown:

  • Mark is in rough shape after that savage fight.
  • Zoey (Tech Jacket) and Allen the Alien are laying low, hunted by Viltrumites who very much want them dead.
  • The Coalition of Planets needs to regroup before it can even think about taking a swing at Thragg.
  • Expect Zoey to matter more and more as the war escalates through the rest of the season.

The long game

Amazon has already renewed Invincible for season 5. Kirkman and the team have made it clear they want multiple additional seasons to land Mark’s full story, so buckle in — this war is a marathon, not a sprint, and Tech Jacket’s overhaul looks like a strategic play for the road ahead.
