Inside the Text Ashley Tisdale Sent Meghan Trainor After the Mom Group Drama
Meghan Trainor puts the viral mom-group drama behind her and Ashley Tisdale French, opening up in an Us Weekly cover story as she gears up for her seventh album Toy With Me, out April 24.
Remember that viral essay about a "toxic" celeb mom group earlier this year? Meghan Trainor says the internet turned it into a saga she was barely even part of. No feuds, no scorched earth — just a mess of confusion and a lot of people getting dragged who did not sign up for it.
Where this started
Back in January, Ashley Tisdale French (40) wrote an essay for The Cut called "Breaking Up With My Toxic Mom Group." She talked about feeling shut out by her mom friends and officially bailing on the group via text. She never named names, but fans quickly did what fans do and guessed the circle included Meghan Trainor (32) — plus Hilary Duff and Mandy Moore — because that was a real mom hang at one point.
Meghan now: not mad, just bummed it blew up
In a new cover interview while out promoting her seventh album Toy With Me (out April 24) and the upcoming Get In Girl Tour, Trainor said she felt for French and chalked the whole thing up to chaos and crossed wires.
"I felt bad for Ashley. I think it was just a lot of miscommunication and confusion. I don’t know what happened, but I wish them all the best."
She also says she texted everyone involved. According to Trainor, French reached out to apologize for Meghan’s name getting pulled into the conversation, and Meghan told her not to stress: the world is wild and people love something to talk about.
What Meghan actually experienced
Here’s the part the internet missed: Trainor says she had barely seen that friend group in ages. She even calls herself a "bad mom friend" who skipped a bunch of their "awesome" events. The last time she saw them was about a year ago — she picked up the dinner tab as a make-good for being MIA. There was a group chat, then a smaller group chat without her because she wasn’t showing up, which she says was totally fine. Then the essay hit, and suddenly her face was everywhere.
She also got apology texts from other moms in the circle after her name started trending. Her take: it turned into a nightmare for people who never wanted attention in the first place. She’s used to online heat and told them she’d take it, but some of those moms went from "un-Googleable" to blasted all over the place, and they were devastated.
Meghan vs. the discourse
Right after the essay went viral, Trainor posted a TikTok basically saying, "Huh?" It showed her at a computer sipping coffee with the caption "Me finding out about the apparent mom group drama, " set to her own song "Still Don’t Care" — which, for the record, is the first single off Toy With Me.
Where it lands now
Despite the whole circus, Trainor says she actually misses having a mom squad. She could use one — but there’s "no time" between work and life. She and husband Daryl Sabara are juggling three kids: sons Riley (5) and Barry (2), and daughter Mikey Moon, who arrived via surrogate in January. Making new mom friends, as she puts it, is brutally hard in this season of life.
Her latest single "Get in Girl" is literally about wanting that ride-or-die friend who shows up when everything’s on fire. As she puts it, she dreams of a buddy pulling up like, "Let’s go shopping. F*** all this. Let’s get out of here."
- January: Ashley Tisdale French publishes "Breaking Up With My Toxic Mom Group"; no names named, fans speculate Meghan/Hilary Duff/Mandy Moore.
- After it blows up: Meghan posts a TikTok saying she’s just learning about the drama, set to "Still Don’t Care" (first single from Toy With Me).
- Meghan’s status then: Hadn’t been around the group in about a year, paid for a catch-up dinner, eventually not in the main group chat; says she was fine with that.
- Behind the scenes: Texts go around, Ashley apologizes to Meghan for her name getting dragged; other moms apologize too as the internet piles on.
- Now: No bad blood, just miscommunication. Meghan’s focused on Toy With Me (April 24), the Get In Girl Tour, and being a mom to Riley, Barry, and newborn Mikey Moon.
