She was not a footnote. She had a serious career, a life across continents, and a close bond with her sister long before that final flight.
Who Lauren Was, Before The Headlines
Lauren Bessette grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut, the daughter of Ann Freeman and William Bessette. She was born in November 1964 and had a twin, Lisa; the two were 14 months older than their little sister, Carolyn. If you only know Lauren from old tabloids, you probably missed the part where she was a high-achieving finance pro with an international resume.
From Wall Street to Hong Kong (and Back)
Lauren studied economics at William Smith College in New York and jumped straight into finance, joining the treasury staff at Morgan Stanley right out of school. She later earned her MBA from the Wharton School and rose to vice president of investment banking at Morgan Stanley.
From 1994 to 1998, she lived in Hong Kong, specializing in Asian markets and speaking fluent Mandarin. Eventually she moved back to New York to be closer to Carolyn, who was working at Calvin Klein. It is the kind of detail that says a lot about their relationship and almost never made the splashy headlines.
Family, Relationships, And That Secret Island Wedding
When Carolyn married John F. Kennedy Jr. in 1996 in that famously low-key ceremony on Georgia's Cumberland Island, Lauren stood next to her as maid of honor. Before her death, Lauren was reportedly dating Bobby Shriver, one of JFK Jr.'s cousins. He was at the family services in 1999.
The Night Everything Changed
On a July night in 1999, JFK Jr. piloted a small plane from New Jersey toward Cape Cod. The plan was straightforward: drop Lauren at Martha's Vineyard Airport, then continue to Barnstable Municipal Airport for Rory Kennedy's wedding at the Kennedy Compound in Hyannis Port.
The flight never made it. At night, over water, JFK Jr. experienced spatial disorientation and the plane went down in the Atlantic off Martha's Vineyard. All three died: Lauren was 34, Carolyn 33, and JFK Jr. 38.
How The Family Marked It
"John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette were true soulmates, and we hope to honor them in death in the simple manner in which they chose to live their lives. We take solace in the thought that together they will comfort Lauren for eternity."
The trio were buried at sea. Back in Greenwich, Lauren's hometown, friends and neighbors held a candlelight vigil in her honor.
