Sunrise on the Reaping landed in March 2025 — and the next Hunger Games is already racing to theaters. Lionsgate greenlit The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping the moment Suzanne Collins unveiled her Haymitch Abernathy prequel.

Another trip to Panem is officially on the calendar. Suzanne Collins dropped the Haymitch Abernathy prequel novel in March 2025, and Lionsgate didn't waste any time fast-tracking the movie version. Smart move.

What this one is and when it lands

'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping' follows 16-year-old Haymitch during the 50th Hunger Games — yes, the Quarter Quell — where District 12's kid from the Seam ends up fighting for his life on national TV so the Capitol can remind everyone who is in charge. The movie hits theaters November 20, 2026.

How Lionsgate got a head start

Lionsgate ordered the film the same day Collins unveiled the book, which let the team jump into development before most fans even had the novel. Producer Nina Jacobson said they moved immediately: there was already a strong script draft in play, locations were being locked, and they were surprisingly far along by the time the book hit shelves. Francis Lawrence — who has directed every Hunger Games film since 'Catching Fire' — is back in the chair and told the CinemaCon crowd in April 2025 this is a "return to form" for the series. The screenplay is by Billy Ray.

Who's playing who

  • Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy (announced April 2025). Whitney Peak plays Lenore Dove Baird, Haymitch's love interest. Mckenna Grace is Maysilee Donner. Zada and Peak both celebrated the news on Instagram with a flurry of red hearts.
  • Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee (April 2025). He follows the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, who portrayed the Head Gamemaker-turned-rebel leader in 'Catching Fire' (2013) and both 'Mockingjay' films (2014, 2015) — Hoffman's final roles before his death in 2014 at age 46.
  • Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee (May 2025), a role originated by Jeffrey Wright in 'Catching Fire'.
  • Maya Hawke as Wiress; Lili Taylor as Mags; Ben Wang as Wyatt, another tribute from District 12 (May 2025). In the earlier films, Amanda Plummer played Wiress and Lynn Cohen played Mags.
  • Ralph Fiennes as President Coriolanus Snow (May 2025). Previously, Donald Sutherland played the older Snow in the original trilogy, and Tom Blyth portrayed him as a young man in 'The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes'. Fiennes knows his way around an iconic villain — hello, Voldemort.
  • Elle Fanning as a younger Effie Trinket (May 2025), a bit of fan casting that actually happened. Elizabeth Banks, of course, made Effie famous in the original films. Also onboard: Molly McCann as Louella McCoy and Iona Bell as Lou Lou.
  • Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman (May 2025), the Games' ever-smiling emcee.
  • Glenn Close as Druscilla Sickle and Billy Porter as Magno Stift (June 2025). Druscilla is the cutting escort for the District 12 tributes; Magno is her estranged husband and their fashion designer. Jacobson called Close a dream fit and praised Porter's ability to dazzle and devastate — she also noted they'd worked together on 'Pose'.
  • Jhaleil Swaby as Panache, a District 1 tribute (June 2025).
  • Iris Apatow and Edvin Ryding as Proserpina and Vitus (July 2025), two Capitol students assigned to prep District 12's tributes for the Quarter Quell.

Production status

Filming kicked off in August 2025 — the official Hunger Games account said "now in production" and showed off some very green, very mountainous locations, plus Zada heading into his trailer.

Yes, familiar faces are floating around

Lawrence is directing his fifth trip to the arena. The studio has teased room for cameos tied to specific moments from the book, and they're not being coy about the legacy factor. The motion poster that premiered at CinemaCon in March 2025 even used a Haymitch line from the original film while a mockingjay and a snake lunge at each other — then reveal they're actually one creature. In December 2025, multiple outlets reported that Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will pop up as Katniss and Peeta in a flash- forward sequence.

The trailer

Lionsgate dropped the first trailer in April 2026, spotlighting Joseph Zada's Haymitch alongside Elle Fanning's Effie, Kieran Culkin's Caesar, Maya Hawke's Wiress, Jesse Plemons' Plutarch, and Ralph Fiennes' Snow. It leans hard into Haymitch's defiance and Snow's menace. You can hear it in the lines they chose:

"I'm sick of living in fear. Just surviving. We're not animals to be killed for their entertainment. "
"If you disobey me, we shall open the bloodbath with the longest, most drawn-out death your people have ever seen."

The big picture

'Sunrise on the Reaping' is the franchise 's second prequel after 2023's 'The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes', and it snaps the focus to the guy who once mentored Katniss and Peeta — Woody Harrelson's Haymitch in the original films that launched back in 2012. With the book and movie developed in tandem, the returning creative team, and a cast stacked with ringers, this one's aiming squarely at what longtime fans show up for.
