Law & Order parted ways with beloved detective Vince Riley—yet the exit it crafted for him isn’t the one you probably pictured.

The goodbye plays out fast and brutal in Law & Order Season 26’s second hour, “Into the Mystic.” Detective Vincent Riley (Reid Scott) leaves a voicemail for ADA Nolan Price and calls Detective Walker for backup, then heads to a neighborhood bar where he believes a lead, Ray Biller, will surface.

Riley finds Biller and tries to talk him down. Biller bolts and fires, hitting Riley. Walker discovers his partner on the street and rushes him to the hospital, where Riley dies.

Riley’s farewell happens in Season 26, Episode 2 (“Into the Mystic”).

The episode pivots to the fallout. Detective Violet Yee connects the dots: Price had prosecuted Biller’s brother, Wayne Biller, years earlier, and Wayne was killed in prison just a week before Riley’s death. Ray Biller was allegedly hunting for Price; Riley crossed his path. By the end of the case, Biller is convicted of Riley’s murder.

In a final tribute, Riley’s name is added to the NYPD Wall of Honor.

Who replaces Riley

Before the episode aired, producers had already lined up a new senior detective. James Badge Dale will join the squad (character name still under wraps), according to Deadline. Dale’s past credits include 13 Hours and 1923.

As for Reid Scott, reports describe his exit as a mutual decision, driven by the cross‑country commute to shoot in New York and spending roughly nine months away from his family.
