Tracker star Justin Hartley says he’s fiercely guarding his marriage to Sofia Pernas, warning not everyone around them has good intentions — and that protecting their bond is nonnegotiable.

Justin Hartley is not doing the usual glossy celeb talk about love. On Tuesday, May 5, the 'Tracker' star, 49, got real on Tommy DiDario's 'I've Never Said This Before' podcast about why he keeps a tight circle around his marriage to Sofia Pernas, 36. It is less romance- novel stuff and more hard-earned, protect-your-peace advice.

'Protect the relationship' is the rule

Hartley credits a piece of wisdom from his stepdad for how he approaches his marriage. He says the people around you can make or break the health of your relationships, even when their intentions are murky or they are not trying to cause trouble.

"You got to take care of your relationship and be very protective of who you surround yourself with and what relationships you surround yourself with."

He spelled it out in plain terms: there are folks in your orbit right now who just cannot handle your relationship. Not because they are villains, but because your happiness pokes at something in them. And this is not just about romance. He stretched it to every kind of bond that matters - family, friends, even the way you talk to yourself - and said you need to be careful about who gets a front-row seat.

Not sabotage, just misalignment

Hartley pushed back on the idea that negative energy always equals active sabotage. In his view, some people do not realize they are being harmful. That still does not mean you need to hear their commentary. There is a difference between someone genuinely rooting for your love and someone who is low-key jealous of it. He even owned up to his own past envy, calling it useless for him personally. Competition is one thing. Envy is something else entirely, and it has never helped him.

How Justin and Sofia got here

If you remember their origin story, Hartley and Pernas first crossed paths in 2015 on 'The Young and the Restless.' They reconnected years later, off set, and tied the knot in 2021. On the podcast, he got a little reflective about what they have - the kind of bond people write songs about, as he put it - and he did not sugarcoat the flip side: not everyone finds that, which he thinks is sad. His bottom line is simple and a little tender: when you do find it, hang on tight because it is special, fragile, and, unfortunately, rare. As for how he sees Pernas: she is everything, and fantastic.

  • 2015: Hartley and Pernas work together on 'The Young and the Restless'
  • Years later: They reconnect away from work
  • 2021: They get married
  • Now: He is guarding the relationship by keeping the right people close - and the wrong energy out

None of this is flashy, but it is the kind of behind-the-scenes reality that actually keeps a marriage standing, especially when both halves live in an industry where everybody has an opinion. Hartley sounds like a guy who has learned to spot the difference between cheerleaders and chaos - and he is clearly choosing the former.
