In Gunsmoke, who did Matt Dillon marry? The full picture takes in the TV movies as well as the series
Twenty years of Gunsmoke, five TV movies, and one of the most-asked questions in classic Western television. Here's what the series, the films, and James Arness himself established about Matt Dillon's love life — and the one episode that changed the answer permanently.
Twenty seasons, 635 episodes, five TV movies, and a nine-year radio run before any of that. If Matt Dillon had a wedding in there somewhere, you'd expect it to be well documented.
He didn't. Across the entire televised franchise — the 1955–75 CBS series and every one of the post-series films — Marshal Matt Dillon never marries anyone. Not Kitty Russell, not anyone else. The confusion usually comes from the fact that he does, eventually, turn out to have a daughter.
Kitty was never the wife
Amanda Blake's Kitty Russell ran the Long Branch and spent two decades in a relationship the show declined to define. There was no engagement, no ceremony, and remarkably little physical contact: her one on-screen kiss with Dillon was a peck on the cheek in the season 17 episode "P.S. Murray Christmas. "
James Arness addressed it directly in a 2006 interview posted on his official site, and his answer was structural rather than romantic.
Marrying Kitty, Arness said, "would have changed the whole premise of the show" — Dillon's job was dangerous, and a married marshal is a different series.
The one woman he kissed on camera
Season 19's "Matt's Love Story," which aired September 24, 1973, is the episode that matters. Dillon takes a head wound, loses his memory, and is nursed back by a widowed rancher named Mike Yardner, played by Michael Learned. They fall in love. They kiss — the only romantic on-screen kiss of Arness's twenty years in the role — and the episode strongly implies more.
Then his memory returns and he rides back to Dodge. Kitty never learns any of it.
The daughter, seventeen years later
The 1990 TV movie Gunsmoke: The Last Apache picks that thread back up. Dillon gets a letter from the Yardner Cattle Company and finds Mike again, played once more by Michael Learned. An Apache war chief has taken her daughter Beth (Amy Stoch). Mike tells him Beth is his.
So Dillon acquires a family in his sixties, without ever having a wedding.
What the five films establish
- Return to Dodge (1987) — Dillon is retired and trapping in the mountains; he comes back to Dodge and to Kitty. Amanda Blake's last performance; she died in August 1989.
- The Last Apache (1990) — the Mike Yardner reunion and the reveal about Beth.
- To the Last Man (1992) — opens with Mike's funeral. Beth stays west instead of going east to school.
- The Long Ride (1993) — Beth's wedding to Josh (Christopher Bradley) is interrupted when her father is arrested for murder.
- One Man's Justice ( 1994) — the last one. Arness is the only actor in all five.
For the record: on radio, where Gunsmoke started in 1952 with William Conrad as Dillon, the marshal didn't marry either. Seventy-plus years and the man never once made it to an altar as the groom — only, in 1993, as the father of the bride.
