IMAX date set for Spider-Man: Brand New Day after Odyssey blockade
IMAX is poised to trade seafaring Greek kings for web‑slinging heroes — with one epic departing as a Spider‑Man saga swings onto the giant screens.
After several weeks playing only in standard and specialty formats, Spider- Man: Brand New Day is finally getting the premium treatment. Sony and Marvel have unveiled an IMAX- exclusive poster and locked in IMAX showtimes beginning August 7, adding the biggest screens to Peter Parker’s already massive run.
How it landed IMAX
The holdup wasn’t for lack of demand. IMAX’s 2026 calendar was tightly packed, and Christopher Nolan ’s The Odyssey had staked out most of the prime summer real estate. Last year’s IMAX slate showed Nolan’s epic occupying IMAX auditoriums from July 17 through August 14, which initially pushed Brand New Day out of the format.
That traffic jam eased sooner than expected. With The Odyssey still chugging along but not as dominant as forecast, IMAX is opening seats a week earlier than that original window suggested, letting Spider-Man swing in on August 7. It’s a rare midrun upgrade for a tentpole that launched without IMAX.
The overcrowding wasn’t limited to Spidey: Marvel’s other 2026 heavyweight, Avengers: Doomsday, also lost premium slots earlier in the year to Denis Villeneuve ’s Dune: Part III. Brand New Day is now the one muscling its way onto the giant format midstream.
Up to now, Tom Holland ’s fourth solo outing as Peter Parker has been available in multiple formats, just not IMAX. The lineup so far has included:
- Standard 2D
- 3D
- 4DX
- ScreenX
IMAX adds a new premium option for fans who want to see Tom Holland’s latest wall-crawling set pieces on the tallest screens with expanded sound.
Box office heat
The upgrade arrives while Brand New Day is already outpacing much of the summer competition. The movie sped past The Odyssey’s cumulative gross within its first four days and posted a staggering worldwide haul out of the gate.
$927 million worldwide in four days
That surge, buoyed by strong word of mouth, makes the late-breaking IMAX run more than a cosmetic add-on; it’s a fresh wave of premium tickets just as the film ’s legs are kicking in. The newly released IMAX poster underscores the shift, signaling a bona fide PLF push rather than a handful of stray screenings.
IMAX showings for Spider-Man: Brand New Day begin August 7, a week earlier than the previously indicated IMAX window tied to The Odyssey’s July 17–August 14 hold on the format.
