How realistic is For All Mankind? The verdict from the former astronaut who advises the show
Apple TV's alternate space race keeps a former NASA astronaut on staff to check its physics, and he has been unusually candid about where the show cheats. Here's what Garrett Reisman says For All Mankind gets right, what he quietly lets slide, and how the series has held up now its timeline has overtaken real life.
For All Mankind exists because a television producer had lunch with an astronaut at SpaceX. That astronaut has been on the payroll ever since, and he will tell you which parts of the show wouldn't survive contact with a flight director.
Garrett Reisman's verdict, broadly: the hardware, the procedures, and the switches are close to exact. The orbital mechanics are where the writers get their liberties, and he signs off on them anyway.
The astronaut in the room
Reisman flew on three different Space Shuttles, lived aboard the International Space Station, and did spacewalks before leaving NASA for SpaceX, where he is now a consultant and a professor of astronautics practice at USC. The show's premise came out of a lunch he had with Ronald D. Moore, who pitched him an alternate history in which the Soviets reach the moon first. Moore has since credited that conversation with sparking the whole thing.
Reisman has been technical consultant since season 1 and the collaboration runs both directions. He pitches solutions — how you shield a crew against surface radiation on Mars, say — and the set designers build around them. He also listens to the writers' ideas and tells them how far off the ideas are.
What it gets right
Set detail is the part that survives professional scrutiny. Reisman appeared on camera in season 2's second episode as a Shuttle pilot, and the checklist he holds was scanned from one of his own. He has said the flight deck mockup was convincing for a specific reason: he could reach for the right switch without looking.

The Mars surface design is built from real data. Showrunner Ben Nedivi has said that photographs coming back from missions like Perseverance directly inform how the production paints the planet, and the season 5 colony leans on the unglamorous logistics — crops, a distillery, cultured protein. As co-showrunner Matt Wolpert put it to Space.com in 2026, food on Happy Valley is grown or printed:
"because they're not shipping cows up to Mars"
Where it cheats
Ask Reisman which part of the show deviates most and he doesn't say the fusion drives or the nuclear propulsion. He says trajectories.
"very astute physicists are going to know could not really happen"
That was his assessment of season 4 specifically, where an asteroid-capture plot needed the maths to be flexible. His defence is that orbital mechanics is an esoteric field almost nobody has an intuitive feel for, so the cost of bending it is low and the storytelling gain is high. Quoted by SlashFilm in 2025, he described his job as trying hard not to let the truth get in the way.
The other honest admission is structural. Each season pushes further past what has actually been done, and the further out the timeline runs, the more the consultant is guessing alongside everyone else.

Could Happy Valley actually exist?
Reisman's answer is more interesting than a yes or no. We could send people to Mars with existing technology tomorrow; the constraints are money and how much risk anyone is willing to accept. What we don't know is what years outside Earth's magnetosphere does to a human body. Apollo controlled that risk by being quick — out and back inside a week. Mars doesn't allow that.
On the asteroid mining that drove season 4, he's bullish: start-ups are already chasing it, water is the genuinely valuable cargo because it becomes oxygen and fuel, and some rocks carry metals valued in the trillions. Extracting any of it economically needs plasma propulsion or fusion, which is exactly why the show granted itself both decades ago.
The part that stopped being fiction
Season 5 arrived on March 27, 2026 with ten weekly episodes running to May 29, set in 2012, with Happy Valley grown into a colony of thousands and Earth demanding jurisdiction over it. Nedivi has pointed out the awkward pleasure of the show catching up to reality — Shackleton Crater and women walking on the moon were speculative writers'-room material in 2017 and are now scheduled events.
For the record: the show's most implausible element may not be the propulsion at all. It's the funding.
