How many Kitchen Nightmares restaurants are still open? Season 1 alone should have warned Ramsay
Gordon Ramsay has been storming into failing restaurants since Kitchen Nightmares premiered on Fox on September 19, 2007 — and with season 10 having arrived July 21, 2026, it's a fair moment to check the scoreboard.
The short answer
According to the long-running tracker Kitchen Nightmares Updates, 93 restaurants have been featured across the show's first nine US seasons — and only 27 of them are still open. That's 64 closures, plus a couple that moved or sold, for a success rate of roughly 29%. Other trackers count slightly differently, but every tally lands in the same grim neighborhood: about seven in ten of Ramsay's rescues eventually went under.
Season 1 was the omen
If Ramsay wanted a preview of how this would go, his very first American season delivered it. Of the 10 restaurants featured in season 1 back in 2007, exactly zero are still open — nine closed outright and one was sold. Viewers have to fast-forward to season 3 before finding a single restaurant that survived long-term.
The season-by-season scoreboard
- Season 1 (2007) — 0 of 10 open. A perfect record, in the worst way.
- Season 7 (2014) — 2 of 6 open, from the show's original run finale.
- Season 8 (2023) — 4 of 6 open after the revival's first season.
- Season 9 (2025 ) — 9 of 10 open, the best result in the show's history.
One caveat on those newer numbers: recent restaurants simply haven't had time to fail yet. Seasons 1 through 7 looked healthier in their first year too.
Why do so many close?
Because Ramsay is called in precisely when things are dire — some owners were carrying more than $500,000 in debt before he ever walked through the door. A one-week makeover can fix a menu; it can't always fix the management that created the mess. The most infamous example remains Amy's Baking Company from season 6, which melted down so spectacularly on and off camera that its 2015 closure surprised nobody. And the pattern isn't uniquely American: 14 of the first 22 restaurants on the original UK version had already closed by 2009.
For the record: Ramsay's actual advice usually works — when owners take it. The show's graveyard is mostly full of people who didn't.
