The Kirklands
Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel) runs the Double K Ranch, inherited from his grandfather, and carries the show's heaviest grief: his wife, Amala, died of illness, and his teenage son, Randall, died in a car crash. His refusal to sell his land to the Austin Water & Power Company drives season 1's central conflict. Season 2 picks up six months later, with Staten unseated as trustee of the Double K and fighting to win his own ranch back.
The Collinses
Davis Collins is Staten's chief rival — and his brother-in-law, because Amala was Davis's sister. That makes Davis's son, Reid, the local football star, Randall's cousin — and Reid spends season 1 hiding a secret about the night Randall died. Kit Russell is tangled in that same night, and season 1's final stretch even ties the sheriff's own wife, Margaret Brigman, to the crash. In Ransom Canyon, the feud and the family tree are the same tree.
The Fullers — and the secret grandson
- Cap Fuller (James Brolin) — the gruff old rancher who turned away his grandson and the boy's mother after his son Lincoln died. He regretted it for the rest of his life.
- Yancy Grey (Jack Schumacher) — the drifter who shows up as Cap's new ranch hand. He's that long-lost grandson, arriving with a plan to con Cap out of his land.
- The turn — Yancy softens, Davis exposes his identity, and when Cap dies peacefully in episode 9, Yancy inherits the Fuller Ranch — and refuses to sell it to Davis.
- The complication — Yancy's romance with Ellie hits a wall when his secret wife turns up, a thread season 2 pulls hard.
Everyone in between
Quinn O'Grady (Minka Kelly) is the connective tissue: a concert pianist and dance hall owner, Amala's best friend, Staten's great love, and the woman Davis wants too. She's also Nick's aunt. Sheriff Dan Brigman holds the badge but not much else together — his wife left amid her addiction struggles, and his daughter, Lauren, is Reid's longtime girlfriend.
