How does Hell on Wheels end?
Hell on Wheels spent five seasons and 57 episodes on AMC building toward one date: May 10, 1869, the day the golden spike completed the Transcontinental Railroad. When the series finale, "Done," aired in July 2016, it opened with that ceremony at Promontory, Utah — and then asked the harder question.
What does a man built for war and railroads do when both are finished?
The golden spike
The finale begins with Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount) waking from a drunken stupor while the ceremony unfolds — Durant and Collis Huntington bickering over who gets to hammer in the final spike. Durant wins that argument. The railroad Bohannon bled for across five seasons is officially done, and he's a chief engineer with nothing left to build.
Durant's reckoning
Thomas "Doc" Durant (Colm Meaney) doesn't escape history. Summoned before a congressional hearing over the railroad's financial corruption, he pleads the Fifth — then delivers a defiant speech arguing that dreams don't come pretty. He seems poised to wriggle free, but viewers already knew better: an earlier flash- forward to New York in 1885 showed where his schemes ultimately leave him. Broke and disgraced, just like the real Durant.
Bohannon's choice
President Grant offers Bohannon a prestigious future: an Army commission as Under Secretary of the Western Territories, protecting the railroad he built. A meeting with a swaggering George Custer convinces him he's no soldier anymore.
Instead, Bohannon returns to a confessional — the same one where he committed one of his revenge killings in the very first episode — and when the priest asks if he wishes to be saved, something in him finally breaks open.
So he walks away from all of it:
- The commission — declined. He's done fighting other men's wars.
- The railroad — finished. The addiction that consumed him for five seasons is over.
- America itself — he takes a train to San Francisco and boards a ship to China, searching for Mei, the woman he loves.
The supporting cast gets closure too: Eva turns down a book deal about her life and rides off on a wild horse, while Mickey quietly throws away the magic lantern slides from the picture show he ran with his dead brother.
Does he find Mei?
The show never says — and that's deliberate. Mount defended the open door in a 2016 Yahoo TV postmortem, describing the ending as "allowing him to leave his battle behind, setting him free." After 57 episodes of vengeance and track-laying, Bohannon's story ends mid-journey, on open water.
