When season 4 of Power Book III: Raising Kanan premiered in March 2025, Kanan's best friend was already gone. No calls, no sightings — Shawn "Famous" Figueroa (Antonio Ortiz) had been missing for three months of story time, and the show let the question sit for four full episodes before answering it.
How Famous died
Episode 5 delivered the confirmation, off-screen: Famous had been tortured and killed, his body dumped in an abandoned house in Mott Haven and hidden under a mattress. The discovery landed just as his mother arrived in Queens looking for him. A day after the episode aired, on April 5, 2025, Ortiz posted a farewell to the role on Instagram, and the show's official account ran a goodbye reel — confirmation that a season 1 mainstay was gone for good.

The exposure that got him killed was already on the board. Famous had shot Freddy Williams back in season 3, and he'd been giving statements to police in the Detective Malcolm Howard murder investigation — the kind of talking that gets noticed by people with police sources.
Marvin had already told Kanan, cryptically, that Famous might never come back from wherever he'd gone. The line played as concern at the time and as information in hindsight.
Who ordered it — and why
Episode 8 named the culprits: Snaps (Wendell Pierce) and Pop (Erika Woods), the old-school power couple who'd been mentoring Kanan. Crooked NYPD officers on their payroll had flagged Famous's cooperation with the police, and the pair decided his statements — along with rap lyrics that put too much street business on record — could lead back to them. The same officers carried out the killing; Snaps and Pop later summoned them to complain about the sloppy body disposal.
The detail that stings most in rewatch: Kanan went to Snaps and Pop to ask if their police contacts could help find Famous's killer. He was commissioning the investigation from the people who ordered the hit.

The cover-up kept spreading in the meantime: the same officers pulled Kanan's girlfriend Krystal off a bus and delivered her to the couple, and Pop shot her mid-conversation over what she might know.
What the final season did about it
Season 5, the show's last, settled the account in July 2026: Jukebox worked out the truth and ambushed Snaps and Pop herself in episode 7, killing them both.
"She outgained us in the end," Erika Woods told Deadline in July 2026, arguing Jukebox was the perfect choice precisely because Kanan was the obvious one.
Wendell Pierce, in the same interview, chalked it up to the occupational reality that nobody in the game watches their back perfectly forever. Famous waited fifteen months of real time for that answer. It arrived from the friend nobody saw coming.
