How are Staten and Davis related in Ransom Canyon?
Netflix's Texas-sized drama Ransom Canyon, which premiered on April 17, 2025, runs on tangled small-town relationships — and none is more tangled than the one between Josh Duhamel's Staten Kirkland and Eoin Macken's Davis Collins. They snipe, they scheme, and yet they keep showing up in each other's lives.
There's a reason for that. They're family.
The short answer
Staten and Davis are brothers- in-law. Staten was married to Davis's sister, Amalah Collins, before her death from illness — so the head of the Kirkland ranch and the owner of the modern Bar W Ranch are bound together by a woman they both loved and lost. Grief didn't bring them closer. It handed them more to fight about.

Davis, working alongside his ex-wife Paula Jo — who sits on the board of Austin Water & Power — spends season 1 pressuring Staten to sell his land so a pipeline can tap the aquifer running beneath it. Staten inherited that ranch from his grandfather and refuses to budge.
So Davis is simultaneously the uncle mourning Randall, the businessman trying to pry Staten off his own land, and the rival dating the woman Staten loves. Family.

Season 1 ended with the triangle unresolved and the land fight simmering, and season 2 — based, like the first, on Jodi Thomas's Ransom Canyon novels — arrived on Netflix on July 23, 2026. Expect the in-laws to keep circling each other.
