Honored by SAG-AFTRA, Al Pacino looks back: “among the greatest joys of my life”
As SAG-AFTRA celebrates his Hollywood legacy, Al Pacino opens up about what still drives him to act.
The union’s top honor will be handed out at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles on February 28, 2027 , during the SAG-AFTRA Actor Awards. The SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award spotlights a body of work that spans film, television, and the stage — the full arc of Al Pacino ’s five-decade career.
Pacino marked the news with a nod to the craft itself and the people he’s worked alongside.
“I wondered and wandered most of my life but have always felt at home with a script and my fellow actors. It ’s the work and the actors along the way that have been among the greatest joys of my life. It’s an honor to be recognized by SAG-AFTRA in celebrating the journey,”
The union, in announcing the tribute, pointed to the way his performances reshaped what screen acting could look and feel like.
“Across film, television and the stage, Pacino has captivated audiences with transformative performances, creating some of the most memorable characters in entertainment history and has profoundly influenced generations of actors and culture itself,”
From Corleone to contradictions
Part of the case for the honor is how wildly different his defining turns are — and how alive they feel moment to moment. The range stretches from a coiled Michael Corleone to combustible antiheroes and dogged truth-seekers.
- The Godfather — Michael Corleone’s simmering restraint that curdles into cold authority.
- Dog Day Afternoon — Sonny’s volatile swing between bravado, panic, and surprising vulnerability.
- Scarface — a portrait of unbridled ambition pushed to the edge.
- Serpico — an idealist NYPD officer isolated by his refusal to accept corruption.
- The Insider — controlled intensity and relentless determination in a journalism drama.
SAG-AFTRA’s citation also acknowledges the influence behind those titles — the pauses, sudden gear shifts, and barely contained energy that actors have studied ever since.
