Gwyneth Paltrow reflects on the 'extra shame' of her Brad Pitt breakup
Gwyneth Paltrow recalls her split from Brad Pitt came with more than heartache — and the extra weight she describes might surprise you.
On the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, Gwyneth Paltrow said the toughest part of ending things with Brad Pitt wasn’t just the breakup itself — it was carrying it under a spotlight. Early in her career, she was being introduced everywhere as “Brad Pitt’s girlfriend,” and when it fell apart, the circus didn’t go away.
“I think the press aspect and all that makes it feel larger than life in a way. You have to carry this faux cultural importance piece, this extra burden and this extra shame that it didn’t work out.”
Paltrow and Pitt met filming Se7en, started dating in 1994 and were engaged two years later. By June 1997, it was over — but she said on the podcast they’ve stayed on friendly terms and still check in with each other occasionally.
The ’90s timeline
- 1994 — Met on the set of Se7en and began dating
- 1996 — Got engaged
- June 1997 — Split
She’s talked before about why the engagement didn’t lead to a wedding. In a 2023 appearance on Call Her Daddy, Paltrow pointed to where they each were in life at the time — and their age difference.
“There were a number of things that had happened, he was nine years older than me — he knew what he wanted, he was ready to do it and I was kind of all over the place.”
After Pitt, Paltrow met Chris Martin backstage at a Coldplay show in October 2002. They married in 2003 and later welcomed two children, Apple and Moses, before separating in 2014.
That same year, she began dating producer Brad Falchuk. The couple married in 2018.
