Guy Pearce is already bracing for a not-so-nice response to his Ink performance—and you can probably guess who it’s coming from.

At the BFI London Film Festival, Guy Pearce didn’t pretend he knew how Rupert Murdoch would feel about seeing himself on screen in Ink, Danny Boyle’s new newspaper drama. Even after hearing some reassuring words from Elisabeth Murdoch, Pearce said he’s expecting a frosty verdict from the media mogul himself.

He might watch the film and go, ‘Eugh! What were they thinking?

Pearce made the comment to The Hollywood Reporter at the festival, acknowledging the unique pressure of playing someone who’s very much alive — and who built a global media empire that still bears his name.

The story

Ink rewinds to 1969 London, when a brash young Murdoch buys the struggling British tabloid The Sun and bets on rogue editor Larry Lamb to turn it around. Lamb assembles an unlikely team of underdog reporters who push boundaries — and propriety — in a race for circulation and clout. The film is directed by Danny Boyle and written by James Graham, adapting his own stage play.

  • Guy Pearce — Rupert Murdoch
  • Jack O’Connell — Larry Lamb
  • Claire Foy — Joyce Hopkirk

The movie made its world premiere as the opening film of the Venice Film Festival on September 2 before heading to London for its festival stop.

Ink is set to open in select theaters on December 11, and will stream on Netflix in the U.S. and Latin America starting January 8, 2027 .
