From Rodeo to Reign: Cody Johnson Clinches ACM Entertainer of the Year
In a seven-way showdown, Cody Johnson seized Entertainer of the Year at the 2026 Academy of Country Music Awards, dedicating the win to fellow nominee Luke Combs at the MGM Grand Garden on Sunday, May 17.
Seven heavy hitters walked into the Entertainer of the Year shootout at the 2026 ACM Awards. Cody Johnson walked out with the belt — and then immediately tipped it to Luke Combs. It all went down Sunday, May 17, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Cody Johnson wins, then salutes Luke Combs
Johnson, 38, won Entertainer of the Year and dedicated the moment to his buddy and fellow nominee Luke Combs, 36. Onstage, he told a quick origin story: as a kid, he duct-taped a toy mic to his bunk bed, strummed a stringless guitar, and belted a Rick Trevino tune about asking someone to walk out real slow while he caught up. That was the dream, and now here we are.
'All I've ever wanted to do was be in front of a crowd and entertain.'
He also got a little philosophical, saying music is basically emotion out loud — and called the feeling of making a crowd feel what you feel the greatest high there is. If that sounds grand, well, so was his night: Johnson also picked up Male Artist of the Year.
The Entertainer of the Year field was stacked
It was a legit seven-way brawl for the top trophy: Johnson, Combs, Chris Stapleton, Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson, Megan Moroney, and Morgan Wallen. No soft spots in that lineup.
Who led the nominations (and for what)
- Megan Moroney, 28 — nine nods: Female Artist of the Year; Song of the Year for 'Am I Okay?'; Single and Visual Media of the Year for '6 Months Later'; Music Event of the Year for 'You Had to Be There' with Kenny Chesney; Artist-Songwriter of the Year.
- Lainey Wilson, 33 — seven nods: Female Artist of the Year; Song, Single, and Visual Media of the Year for 'Somewhere Over Laredo'; Music Event of the Year for 'Trailblazer' with Reba McEntire and Miranda Lambert.
- Chris Stapleton, 48 — six nods: Male Artist of the Year; Song, Music Event, and Visual Media of the Year for 'A Song to Sing' with Miranda Lambert, 42.
- Cody Johnson, 38 — four nods: Male Artist of the Year (winner); Single and Visual Media of the Year for 'The Fall.'
- Luke Combs, 36 — three nods: Male Artist of the Year; Artist-Songwriter of the Year.
- Morgan Wallen, 33 — three nods: Artist-Songwriter of the Year; Album of the Year for 'I'm the Problem.'
- Jelly Roll, 41 — two nods: his track 'Amen' with Shaboozey competed for Music Event of the Year.
Context that matters
Coming into the night, Wilson was the back-to-back reigning Entertainer of the Year (2024 and 2025 ). Stapleton is the only other recent winner in this bunch, taking it in 2023. During her 2025 speech, Wilson admitted she battles a little imposter syndrome and then basically explained why she does this: to make people feel something — laugh, smile, cry, the works.
The long game: how often these names pop up
If you like the stats angle, here you go: Stapleton has now been nominated for Entertainer of the Year eight times. Combs is at seven. Wallen has four. Wilson, Johnson, and Jelly Roll have each chalked up three apiece. And this was Moroney's first-ever shot at the big one — nine total nods and a brand-new name in the top category is quite an entrance.
Bottom line: a crowded field, a gracious win, and one very long arc from a duct-taped mic on a bunk bed to the biggest stage in country music.
