Ethan Hawke says his big mouth may have sunk his shot at Titanic
Ethan Hawke is revisiting the Titanic role he lost — and the way his talkative reputation helped torpedo his chances.
On Late Night with Seth Meyers, Ethan Hawke said he’d made it all the way to a final screen test for Titanic with James Cameron and Kate Winslet — and then talked himself right out of the job. He described being so amped about the opportunity that he couldn’t stop filling the room with chatter.
"I completely blew it..because I couldn't shut up," Hawke said.
Hawke recalled riffing to Cameron about how he pictured Titanic as a giant, throwback spectacle in the vein of 1970s disaster epics — he even name-checked The Towering Inferno. He could practically hear a voice in his head telling him to be quiet, but by then, he said, the damage was done.
He’d already survived multiple rounds of auditions, and a screen test meant he was very close. Still, he laughed off the misstep, suggesting the role of Jack Dawson probably belonged to someone else all along.
DiCaprio’s very different read
Hawke contrasted his chatty audition with how Leonardo DiCaprio approached the same room. Cameron has said DiCaprio initially balked at reading opposite Winslet — reportedly telling the director, “Oh, I don’t read” — fresh off the heat of Romeo + Juliet.
According to Cameron, once DiCaprio realized the part wasn’t guaranteed, he agreed to read. When the director called “Action, ” the attitude vanished and DiCaprio snapped into Jack. Cameron later described it as a “ray of sun” lighting up the character on the spot, the moment the casting clicked.
As Hawke put it, it felt like the cinema gods had already picked their Jack Dawson — and they picked DiCaprio.
