Ethan Hawke is taking his awards shortfall in stride, cracking jokes about the biggest trophies still missing from his shelf.

Asked by GQ’s Zach Baron what kind of recognition actually matters to him, Ethan Hawke didn’t point to the Oscars. He zeroed in on the prizes decided by festival juries — the ones handed out in dark screening rooms by a handful of peers — and joked that he’s never snagged one. That, he said with a grin, is why he thinks of himself as a “loser.”

“I’m just a loser. I think it ’s just envy that’s kept me from the prize,”

Hawke explained that he admires how jury awards at top festivals can land without campaigning or a box-office push attached. As an example, he pointed to Juliette Binoche, who’s won across the major circuit, and contrasted that low-hype world with the bigger business swirling around Oscar season. His own Oscar history spans both acting and writing — including co-writing two of the Before films — but in his mind, those jury decisions feel purer.

“I’ve been nominated five times. I think that sounds really cool.”

He kept the tone playful, but he also drew a line around how much attention he wants. Hawke said he likes the fame level he’s at — famous enough to work with great directors and actors, but not so recognizable that a grocery run becomes an ordeal. In his view, stardom can turn sour if you keep feeding the need for praise.

He told a quick airport story to make the point: a traveler asked if he was still acting and told him to keep going. Different people know him from different corners of his résumé, and he’s good with that.

Hawke said he likes that his career jumps across genres and eras — and that he’s stayed in the sweet spot where the work is front and center, not the trophy chase.
