Darren Aronofsky and Gillian Flynn are teaming up for the first time on a mysterious erotic thriller. The project, still untitled, hints at a dark, modern edge and promises to explore complex themes.

Director Darren Aronofsky is expanding his already impressive slate of upcoming films with a fresh announcement: he’s set to collaborate with acclaimed author and screenwriter Gillian Flynn on a new, untitled erotic thriller. While the storyline remains tightly under wraps, the pairing of these two creative powerhouses suggests a sharp, contemporary spin on the genre.

Flynn, known for penning the screenplay for Steve McQueen’s Widows and adapting her own bestselling novel Gone Girl for David Fincher, has seen several of her works, including Dark Places and Sharp Objects, successfully brought to the screen. She’s also currently writing the script for Tim Burton’s much-anticipated reimagining of Attack of the Fifty-Foot Woman at Warner Bros. Despite her extensive experience in film and television, this marks the first time Flynn and Aronofsky will work together.

Creative Collaboration and Production

The upcoming thriller will be produced by 1.21, the company behind projects like Austin Butler’s Elvis and the horror film Together starring Dave Franco and Alison Brie. With this production team, the film is expected to deliver a dark, modern atmosphere and delve into thought-provoking themes.

Aronofsky’s recent work has shown his willingness to branch out from his signature style. Reflecting on his latest film, Caught Stealing, Far Out noted,

Caught Stealing represents a departure for the filmmaker, and it indicates a desire to show that he has other strings to his bow than traumatic, haunting dramas that hollow out audiences’ souls.”

In this film, Austin Butler stars as Hank Thompson, a bartender in New York City who gets swept into the criminal underworld after crossing paths with his punk-rock neighbor, played by Matt Smith.

Aronofsky’s Expanding Filmography

Beyond this new project with Flynn, Aronofsky’s schedule is packed. He’s working on the A24 film Breakthrough with Dwayne Johnson set to star, a reboot of Cujo for Netflix, and an Elon Musk biopic, also for A24. Known for his intense and often unsettling storytelling, Aronofsky first made waves with the harrowing addiction drama Requiem For A Dream, and has since delivered acclaimed films like Black Swan, Mother!, and The Whale.

Fans can also look forward to the release of the trailer for his 2025 film, Caught Stealing, which promises to showcase yet another side of his directorial range.
