Dakota Johnson Says One Handshake Got Her Labeled Cocky — and Cost Her the Role
Dakota Johnson is spilling on a callback that went sideways, telling Hits Radio that after she shook every hand and jumped into the scene, things got weird fast.
File this under: only-in-Hollywood feedback. Dakota Johnson says she once lost a job because she… shook too many hands. Yes, really.
In a recent chat with UK outlet Hits Radio, the 36-year-old actor walked through a callback that went sideways over basic manners. She says she went into the room, introduced herself, shook everyone’s hand, did the scene, and left. The note that came back: she was being "pompous," "schmoozing," and "full of myself." Translation: the handshake was apparently a red flag. According to Johnson, she was told she didn’t get the job because they felt she was "being cocky." Her reaction was basically: what are we doing here? She insists it was just manners, and called the whole thing "pretty crazy."
As far as audition sins go, greeting the room is a pretty tame one. But sure, let’s call courtesy a power move and keep it moving.
Johnson has also been upfront about how she picks projects and the kind of sets she refuses to tolerate. Speaking to Variety in July 2025, she laid out her no-drama policy and why producing has changed the game for her.
"I can’t waste time on toxic sets anymore, or in situations that are not fun or fulfilling or healthy. That’s one of the perks of producing, because I get to put amazing people together and make something."
She was clear about the vibe she expects: no one "mean or condescending or unkind," a team that actually collaborates, and room for passionate debate without ego. In her words, the best idea should win; it’s not a fight, not a race. She also said she’s "pretty vocal" about standing up for herself, and that being in a position to hire the team makes a "huge difference."
On deck: Johnson stars in Verity, the thriller adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel, alongside Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett. It’s set to hit theaters in October.
And if you’re keeping score on Hollywood lineage: Dakota is the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, and the granddaughter of Tippi Hedren. So yes, she’s been around a few rooms like that. Handshakes apparently still optional.
