Clint Eastwood’s breezy “one more take” is anything but reassuring for actors—and the reason might surprise you.
On a November 2024 Warner Classics special, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks peeled back the curtain on how Clint Eastwood runs a set — and why a quiet “let’s do one more” from him can freeze a room. Eastwood’s reputation for moving fast and printing the first good take is so entrenched that any request for another pass lands like a jolt.
“If there’s five actors in the room and he wants one more take, they’re all probably looking at each other, ‘What did I do? Was it me? Was it you?’” Spielberg explained.
Hanks, drawing on his time with Eastwood on Sully (2016), said the director ’s speed comes from trust — he believes actors can deliver in the moment and won’t sand down spontaneity with endless tinkering. If a detail won’t survive the edit, Eastwood would rather keep momentum than burn daylight trying to perfect it.
