Christopher Nolan got a direct call from an embarrassed Casey Affleck after a Tenet argument
Casey Affleck recounts how a Tenet debate with Christopher Nolan led to one awkward phone call — and what, exactly, made it weird.
Onstage at the Zurich Film Festival on Monday, Casey Affleck said he once pulled out his phone mid–school run to settle a family argument about the plot mechanics of Tenet—by dialing Christopher Nolan himself. In hindsight, he admitted, that impulse was “probably a mistake.”
“We got him on the phone and asked him something that we could have easily looked up on Reddit. Once he said it, it sounded so obvious I felt embarrassed.”
Affleck recalled that after Nolan laid out the answer, the whole thing felt painfully clear. He joked they haven’t spoken since, quipping that the director might get him back by calling to critique his own movie, Company, and ask what he was thinking.
On Nolan’s sets
Affleck, who worked with Nolan on Interstellar and Oppenheimer, described being on the filmmaker’s sets as an honor. He praised Nolan’s approach as inclusive and precise, saying the director gives sharp, minimal direction and consistently lifts everyone’s work.
Praise for Nolan — and Ben
The actor, who has directed three films himself, said he admires Nolan’s artistic integrity—making massive, wildly successful blockbusters driven by personal curiosity rather than by career calculus or pandering. Affleck added he’d be lucky to emulate that kind of uncompromising philosophy behind the camera.
He also pointed to his brother Ben Affleck as someone who chooses projects with intelligence: strategic about commercial prospects but never chasing trends. Ben’s next directing gig, Animals, is coming soon to Netflix .
