Chris Abbott just made it official: he and Aubrey Plaza are expecting their first child. He shared the news on Monday’s Today With Jenna and Sheinelle, cracking, "I thought for my Tony nom!"

Chris Abbott went on morning TV and basically confirmed what everyone already suspected: he and Aubrey Plaza are having a baby. He did it with a joke, obviously.

The on-air moment

Abbott, 40, stopped by NBC's 'Today With Jenna and Sheinelle' on Monday, May 18, and Jenna Bush Hager, 44, went straight for it, congratulating him on the baby news. Abbott pretended, briefly, that she meant his other big headline this month: a 2026 Tony nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play for playing Biff in 'Death of a Salesman.' Then he admitted, yeah, there is a lot going on.

"I thought for my Tony nom! No, no, I'm kidding."

He kept it simple after that: thanked the hosts, called it exciting, and said life feels like a little too much right now. Honestly, fair enough.

So where are they in the baby timeline?

Plaza's rep confirmed last month that she and Abbott are expecting their first child together. A source close to them called the pregnancy a beautiful surprise and said the two feel very lucky. The baby is due this fall. At one point during a recent interview, Plaza even laughed about a well-timed kick mid-conversation, which tells you the kid already has comic timing.

How we got here

This pairing did not come out of nowhere if you've been paying attention to their work. They first teamed up in the 2020 indie thriller 'Black Bear' and reunited in 2023 for an Off-Broadway revival of 'Danny and the Deep Blue Sea.' After that, things shifted from co-stars to something more.

  • July 2025: The Instagram rumor mill (DeuxMoi) spotted them at The Chatham Berry Farm just outside New York City.
  • Late 2025: They showed up at a New York Knicks game together.
  • Spring 2026: Plaza's rep confirms the pregnancy; Abbott finally talks about it on TV.

The personal context

Before Abbott, Plaza was married to filmmaker Jeff Baena. She had been separated from him for four months when he died by suicide at 47 in January 2025. At the time, her team called it an unimaginable tragedy and asked for privacy.

Months later, in August 2025, Plaza opened up on Amy Poehler's 'Good Hang' podcast. She said she was grateful to be moving through the world and functioning, but that getting through each day was still a struggle. It was a candid, clear-eyed check-in from someone working through real grief.

Bottom line

Abbott and Plaza are gearing up to be first-time parents this fall, he is juggling awards-season attention for 'Death of a Salesman,' and the two of them seem genuinely excited about what is next. Not exactly a low-key summer, but if any couple can multitask chaos, it is probably these two.
