Chappelle’s Show still sits atop the sketch-comedy pantheon — a three-season blitz from 2003–2006 that hijacked the zeitgeist and minted catchphrases like Im Rick James — and Netflix is leaning in.

Did not have this on my bingo card: Dave Chappelle says he might actually bring back Chappelle's Show.

Quick rewind on why that matters

  • Chappelle's Show ran a brief but seismic three-season stretch from 2003 to 2006, and it sat at or near the top of basically every all-time sketch/variety list that counts.
  • It rewired pop culture with stuff that never left the chat: lines like "I'm Rick James!" and full-on sketch premises like the Racial Draft, which still get people arguing on Twitter.
  • The ride ended hard in 2006, mid-production on Season 3. Chappelle famously walked away from a $50 million deal, left the show — and the country — and took off to Africa for a spontaneous sabbatical.
  • Since then, he rebuilt his career (and his bank account), becoming one of the biggest stand-up comics on the planet. But the show itself? Never came back into play. Until now.

What changed

In a new Associated Press profile tracking his career ups and downs — including the more recent blowback from various groups over material in his act, particularly the run of Netflix specials in the 2020s — the topic of TV came up. And instead of shutting the door, Chappelle cracked it open.

"If you'd asked me that question a year ago, I'd have told you absolutely not," he said. "But in the last few weeks ... I'm considering it."

What we actually know (and don't)

That quote is the whole ballgame for now. No details on format, partners, timing — nothing. Either he kept the rest close to the vest, or AP kept it tight in the piece.

Still, after years of the answer being a flat no, 'I'm considering it' is a big swing. Fans are going to lose it, and yes, your feed is probably about to be wall-to-wall Chappelle takes.
