Career wins and romance bloom for Alex in Youth episode 6 recap
If HBO's Youth episode 7 left you with questions, the key beats and connections are about to snap into place.
Episode 7 picks up with Alex doing everything she can to dodge the flood: ignoring work emails, silencing calls, even leaving her friend Sam on read. She’s not alone, though — Patrick has been staying over since their last fight, and he nudges her to finally look. When she does, it ’s a wave of good news: their author Jessie has been nominated for the Women’s Lit Awards, and Charlotte is set to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award — a banner day for the agency.
That relief is new for Alex. She’d recently come clean to Sam about lying over Yafa Barghouti, and it hasn’t blown up their partnership. She even shrugs off a missed bus and walks to the office, where she deftly defuses a blowup with Charlotte’s daughter, who’s furious she wasn’t mentioned on a podcast. Alex also steadies a rattled Jessie after a stalker scare. For once, the pieces of work and life seem to click.
The kids and the exes
Elsewhere, her teen Ruari heads to a bar with Plum and a former coworker, where Plum says Malcolm behaved inappropriately with her. Ruari is gentle and present, and the two grow closer — which sends him spinning about his own sexual performance. He doom-scrolls “advice” videos and, in a panicked move later, takes two Viagra pills, a decision that ends up derailing their date when he runs late and Plum falls asleep.
Sam, meanwhile, is quietly worried about her husband’s therapy sessions and what they might surface about their marriage. All of that tension lands at Lorcan’s going-away party before his move to Toronto.
Dinner fireworks
In a bathroom sidebar, Alex and Sam vent about Lorcan and Theresa — and Theresa overhears. Back at the table, she fires back with a grenade: Lorcan has reversed his vasectomy, and they’re trying for a baby. Alex bristles, pointing to Lorcan’s spotty record as a father to Ruari; Lorcan tries to turn it on Alex, and Ruari steps in to defend her.
Through all this, Alex and Patrick have been in a sweet spot. He’s great with her parents, and they’ve even floated a Paris trip. But after the party, back at his place, she stumbles on a handwritten “pros and cons” list about dating her — pages of pros, and one blunt, devastating con.
“She can’t give me a family of my own.”
Alex thought Patrick didn’t want kids; the note says otherwise. She finds it the same night Lorcan toasts his new life in Toronto, and just after she and Patrick sketched out Paris.
