Britney Spears' Father Makes Rare Public Appearance in Wheelchair at Granddaughter's Graduation
Britney Spears’ father Jamie Spears made a rare public appearance in a wheelchair at granddaughter Maddie’s high school graduation on Friday, May 8, two years after his right leg amputation. The 73-year-old sat with family in a gray suit during the ceremony.
Quick family milestone check-in: the Spears crew turned up for a high school graduation, and it ended up being a rare public sighting of Jamie Spears in a wheelchair. Britney wasn’t there, but her older son was. There’s also a fresh update on Britney’s DUI case that explains why she’s keeping a lower profile right now. Here’s how it all lined up.
Who was there (and who wasn’t)
- Jamie Spears, 73, rolled in wearing a gray suit and sitting in a wheelchair at granddaughter Maddie Aldridge’s high school graduation on Friday, May 8. Photos made the rounds via Page Six.
- Lynne Spears was there too.
- Jamie Lynn Spears, 35, attended with husband Jamie Watson and their younger daughter, Ivey, 8. Jamie Lynn cried in the audience while snapping pics like every proud parent ever.
- The graduate: Maddie, 17, whom Jamie Lynn shares with ex-fiance Casey Aldridge.
- Britney Spears, 44, did not attend. Her son Sean Preston, 20, did, keeping it casual in a white T-shirt, black pants, and an earbud. He held up a small cutout of Maddie in a grad cap, complete with a sign that read: 'Look who’s graduated.'
- Jayden James, 19, Britney’s younger son with ex-husband Kevin Federline, wasn’t spotted.
- One sweet moment: Ivey was seen pushing her grandfather Jamie’s wheelchair through the crowd while her mom and grandmother walked behind.
Why Jamie’s appearance turned heads
It’s the first notable public family outing for Jamie in a while. He was removed as Britney’s conservator back in November 2021. In October 2023, he was hospitalized with an infection, and two months later he had his right leg amputated. Before that, in 2019, he underwent two emergency surgeries for a ruptured colon. He’s a retired construction business owner, and given the health run he’s had, seeing him out with the family at a big life event stands out.
Where Britney is in all this
Two months before the graduation, Britney was arrested near her home in Ventura County, California, on suspicion of driving under the influence. Her team owned it right away, putting the tone where it needed to be:
"This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time."
In April, she voluntarily checked into a treatment center and was officially charged with a DUI later that month. At a May 4 arraignment, her attorney appeared on her behalf and entered a guilty plea to a misdemeanor 'wet reckless' — basically reckless driving involving alcohol or drugs — and the DUI charge was dismissed as part of the deal.
The sentence: 12 months of probation and one day in jail (credited for the time she already spent in custody). She’s required to complete a DUI class, pay $571 in state-mandated fees, see a psychologist once a week, and meet with a psychiatrist twice a month.
So, a family graduation with plenty of history hovering around it: Jamie back in public view after serious health issues, Jamie Lynn front-and-center for her daughter, and Britney working through court-ordered steps quietly off to the side. For this family, that’s about as normal as it gets.
