Behind the seams: Kristin Davis recalls early friction with SATC costume designer
Kristin Davis pulls back the curtain on her relationship with SATC’s costume designer — and it’s not the dynamic you might expect.
On the latest episode of her podcast Are You a Charlotte?, Kristin Davis told former co-star Evan Handler that early fittings with Patricia Field on Sex and the City were bumpy. Davis said Field struggled with how to dress her body in an era obsessed with straight, narrow silhouettes.
“She would just be so frustrated with my curves because at the time when we started — 1998 or whatever it was, 1997 — everything was straight, like straight. And I’ve never been straight, nothing, no amount of dieting.”
Davis said she even tried eating “like a ballet dancer” before moving toward a healthier routine. Over time, things eased up between them; by Season 6, she felt Field had accepted her shape — and Davis specifically shouted out the wedding gown designed for Charlotte that season. It’s a notable footnote for a character who racked up signature looks, from tulle and pearls to that unforgettable pink dress.
Handler had his own gripes
Handler — who played Charlotte’s husband, Harry Goldenblatt — remembered being less than thrilled with some of his wardrobe too. He acknowledged Harry was supposed to be a simple, unfussy guy, but he didn’t love how that translated in the closet.
“And I was being given these, what felt to me at the time, kind of ill-fitting, stiff, not very attractive suits and ugly ties,” he said. “And she kept [telling me], ‘I’m going to show you the greatest thing ever.’ And I would think it was hideous.”
Handler added that he mostly kept quiet at the time because he was new to the show, and he now credits Field’s bold fashion sense as one of the series’ secret weapons.
Who’s dressing the revival
For the Max revival And Just Like That…, the costume department is led by Molly Rogers — a longtime Field collaborator — alongside Danny Santiago, carrying the show’s style legacy forward on the new chapters of Charlotte’s story.
