Back to Broadway: Jonathan Groff brings the Amish Project, a powerful solo play
Jonathan Groff is gearing up for a deeply moving new stage turn, bringing an acclaimed Jessica Dickey play to Broadway in 2027 — but which play?
Performances of The Amish Project are set to begin February 10, 2027 at Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre , with Jonathan Groff taking on Jessica Dickey’s solo play under the direction of Sarna Lapine, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The piece centers on the aftermath of a schoolhouse shooting in an Amish community and the radical act of forgiveness that followed. It ’s an intimate, one-actor work — a sharp turn from Groff’s recent stretch of big, music-driven hits — and one that nods to his Pennsylvania upbringing.
“... I am profoundly grateful to be bringing Jessica’s play to Broadway alongside Sarna and this incredible team,” Groff said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Recent hot streak
Groff arrives to the Broadhurst off a major season on Broadway, including his Tony-winning performance as Franklin Shepard in Merrily We Roll Along. It adds another gear to a stage career that’s comfortably bounced between rock musicals, Sondheim, and Shakespeare.
- Spring Awakening — Melchior Gabor
- Hamilton — King George III
- Merrily We Roll Along — Franklin Shepard
- Mindhunter — Holden Ford
- Frozen — Kristoff (voice)
On screen, he’s as familiar to Netflix viewers as to Disney fans, from the meticulous Holden Ford in Mindhunter to the mountain-loving Kristoff in Frozen — a role he’s set to reprise in Frozen 3.
