At her peak, child star Larisa Oleynik left Hollywood — no regrets
At a career high, Larisa Oleynik chose to leave Hollywood—and she’s unpacking the why and what life beyond fame has meant to her.
At the height of The Secret World of Alex Mack, the show’s producer put a five-season extension on the table, plus a feature film and a big payday. Larisa Oleynik walked away. Years later, she explained the choice without any mystery or mess.
“I have absolutely no regrets about that,” she told HuffPost in 2012. “It was an incredible thing he was offering me, and I knew that at the time, but I was a little burnt out.”
Oleynik said the glare of fame didn’t suddenly crash in — it built slowly — so by the time Alex Mack was everywhere, she already had ways to handle it. She stressed her exit wasn’t about the show, anyone she worked with, or Nickelodeon; the pressure was internal. She was pushing herself to be great at everything and didn’t want a job to feel that hard forever.
Life after Nickelodeon
Instead of riding the teen-star wave, Oleynik pivoted to Sarah Lawrence College, where she spent four years buried in books and skipped the theater track. She still popped up on screens: in 1999 she played Bianca in the hit teen rom-com 10 Things I Hate About You, then followed with the college comedy 100 Girls the next year.
- 10 Things I Hate About You — Bianca (1999)
- 100 Girls — Wendy (2000)
- Mad Men — Cynthia Cosgrove (5 episodes)
- Remember Sunday — TV movie
- Wish Upon a Christmas — TV movie
- Erin & Aaron — returned to Nickelodeon in 2023 as a mom
Off set, Oleynik keeps things low-key in Venice, California, and hasn’t shared much publicly about marriage or kids. Her most recent nostalgic full-circle moment came with that 2023 Nickelodeon return on Erin & Aaron.
