Nicole Kidman is revisiting her early marriage to Tom Cruise — and the reason she put love ahead of her career.

In a new interview with British Vogue, Nicole Kidman looks back on the moment her personal life vaulted into the center of Hollywood. She says that at 22 or 23, marrying Tom Cruise felt natural, and she tuned out warnings that hitching herself to the industry’s biggest name could derail her own path because she was, as she puts it, “madly in love.”

“Suddenly I was 22, 23 years old and I had this huge movie star husband. But it just seemed completely natural. We just fell madly in love, and it was that simple.”

Kidman recalls people around her cautioning that becoming Tom Cruise’s wife might define her more than her work. Her mindset at the time, she says, was to put love first, even if that meant stepping away from career plans.

“Of course I’ll throw my career away. I don’t care.”
“I don’t care. I’m in love. I want to be married.”

From set to spotlight

The relationship began on the set of Days of Thunder in 1990, where on‑screen sparks quickly turned into one of the decade’s most-watched real‑life romances. The pair married that same year, a union that dominated entertainment headlines and shaped the way the industry and the public viewed Kidman in her early 20s.

She also addresses the skepticism that followed, saying some later pointed to her being known as “Tom Cruise’s wife” as proof those early warnings were right. Kidman pushes back on that view in the interview, framing her choices then as decisions made out of love rather than career calculation.

Kidman’s comments appear in her candid conversation with British Vogue, offering a rare window into how she navigated that pressure at the start of her Hollywood ascent.
