Another chance to mourn Patrick Swayze? Dirty Dancing sequel might make it happen
The upcoming Dirty Dancing sequel will honor a late actor — and you already know the name.
Producer Nina Jacobson says the new Dirty Dancing sequel is building space into the story to acknowledge and mourn Patrick Swayze—and it will not attempt a digital recreation of him. Speaking at the Future of Filmmaking 2026 Summit and in an interview with IndieWire, Jacobson said the team has been working with Swayze’s estate from the start; his widow, Lisa Niemi Swayze, read the script early and was “very moved by it.”
Honoring Swayze, not recreating him
Jacobson put the guiding principle plainly.
That’s one of the things that you really have to focus on: how to let people mourn him in a movie.
She also made an unambiguous pledge about technology.
And don’t worry, we won’t be bringing him back with AI.
The sequel’s creative team consulted closely with the Swayze estate to shape how Johnny’s presence is felt without appearing on screen. Lisa Niemi Swayze, who received the script before production, said she was “very moved by it,” and appreciated the care taken with Johnny’s legacy, according to Jacobson.
A new love story, same feeling
Rather than replaying the 1987 plot, the filmmakers are chasing the same rush the original delivered—young love that feels dangerous and transformative—while telling a contemporary story. Jennifer Grey has been deeply involved, helping the team zero in on what makes Baby’s journey still resonate.
It should make you feel the way the book did, and it should feel the way the book felt.... Being able to tell a young love story that could take some of those risks but also inspire those feelings felt like an incredible chance for us.
It’s the first substantial update on the project in years; a director hasn’t been announced yet. Filming is currently planned to begin in late 2026.
