The Batman Part II now has a new director—one you probably didn’t have on your bingo card.

Production on The Batman Part II is restarting after a short pause — with a twist behind the camera. Steven Soderbergh has stepped in to finish principal photography while director Matt Reeves temporarily attends to a family matter. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Soderbergh will oversee the shoot in London, with Reeves continuing to guide the movie from Los Angeles and planning to be hands-on again in post.

  • Steven Soderbergh will complete the London shoot
  • Matt Reeves remains the film ’s director and will steer post-production from LA
  • Filming is reportedly about two-thirds complete
  • Robert Pattinson returns as Batman

Reeves made a point of clarifying his role as news of the arrangement broke, saying he remains very much attached to the sequel even as Soderbergh helps bring the current leg of filming home.

“Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II. I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography,” Reeves wrote on X.

The switch arrives after the shoot briefly halted, a pause star Robert Pattinson had recently told fans would be short. It ’s not the first time a major superhero project has seen a midstream handoff on set — 2017’s Justice League, for example, shifted from Zack Snyder to Joss Whedon during production — but in this case Reeves is staying on and overseeing the film as it heads to the finish line.

The sequel’s tone

Pattinson has been hinting at how the follow-up is evolving from the 2022 hit, saying the new chapter pushes into fresh territory while carrying over key elements from the first film’s world.

“It’s so ambitious. I mean, I sort of said the other day on something that the first one was a different take on a Batman movie, and this one is another,” he told Collider.

Reeves has previously said that Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan have joined the project. Plot and villain details remain under wraps, but Pattinson’s “another take” comment has fueled speculation about how the sequel expands Gotham.

With Soderbergh now running the set in London and Reeves coordinating from LA, cameras are rolling again as the production moves through its final stretch of principal photography.
