A resignation kick-starts Ted Lasso’s next chapter — plus a reunion with an old friend
Back in the UK and primed to coach Richmond's women's team, Ted’s fresh start hits an unexpected roadblock right out of the gate.
Introduced as the new head coach of Richmond’s women’s side, Ted walks into a UK press conference ready to talk tactics — and gets peppered with questions about the men’s team instead. Reporters ask about the men’s season opener and salaries while barely glancing at the squad Ted’s actually there to lead. It ’s a sharp early reminder of what this season is taking on.
Inside the club, the resource gap is just as blunt. The women are stuck changing in a cramped room with minimal amenities, and it’s clear they’ve been an afterthought. Ted vows to fix what he can while building a competitive group, even as Higgins warns Rebecca that launching a women’s team this way could get messy fast. Rebecca presses ahead anyway.
Richmond’s women are crammed into a tiny changing room with just one shower.
Alice makes her stand
Before Ted is even settled, assistant coach Alice Chilton (Tanya Reynolds) confronts Rebecca about being passed over for manager. She’s been there from the start, helped build the program, and fully expected to be in the running. When she’s told she wasn’t considered, Alice resigns on the spot — then coolly promises to stay through the week to help with the transition. She even hands over a meticulous dossier on every player.
Ted meets Alice and, in typical Ted fashion, cuts through the awkwardness with honesty. He tells her what others say — that she can read as rude and cynical — and then shows he’s actually done his homework. Alice was once a rising star in the women’s game until an early injury ended her career. Coaching keeps her tethered to the dream she lost. Ted gives her a small goodbye gift and, more importantly, respect.
That’s what tips it. After realizing Ted sees her value — and her history — Alice withdraws the resignation. She stays on, and Ted pockets the gift with a grin, suddenly looking a lot more secure on the touchline.
Where’s Coach Beard?
At first, not with Ted. Beard isn’t speaking to him and looks worse for wear while helping Roy Kent steer the men’s side. A quiet pub meetup between the former partners turns awkward fast. When Roy finds out Beard saw Ted, he clocks the obvious: you don’t separate Beard from Ted for long.
After a quick consult with Keeley, Roy makes the cleanest break possible. He tells Beard he has to leave the men’s team for a team-rules violation — and then pointedly notes that other teams might be more forgiving about guidelines. It’s Roy’s way of giving Beard permission to go where he belongs without losing face.
By the final minutes, Beard is back at Ted’s side, the two of them literally bouncing around at the reunion. With Alice on board, Richmond’s women now have a coaching trio in place — and a very long to-do list.
The first two episodes of Ted Lasso Season 4 are streaming now on Apple TV+ .
