Dune: Part Three will feature IMAX-exclusive expanded aspect ratio footage for a chunk of the movie — and the minute count is what you clicked to find out.

Seven-story-tall sandworms are about to get even bigger. According to an IMAX press release, Denis Villeneuve shot a large chunk of Dune: Part Three specifically for the giant screens, and audiences will see dramatically more image at the top and bottom of the frame during those sequences.

What you’ll see in IMAX

For this installment, Villeneuve used both IMAX Film Cameras and IMAX‑certified digital cameras — a first for the series — with select scenes captured on 70mm IMAX film. The company says moviegoers will get substantially more picture information during the expanded sequences than in standard theaters.

“Dune: Part Three features 71 minutes of IMAX’s exclusive 1.90:1 Expanded Aspect Ratio,” the press release says.

Some of those scenes will go even taller at a handful of venues equipped for IMAX with Laser and IMAX 70mm film, where they’ll play in the format’s towering 1.43:1 frame. IMAX touts its film cameras as delivering roughly 10x the resolution of traditional 35mm and 3x that of standard 5‑perf 65mm, a spec meant to translate to extra detail when the image fills the auditorium from top to bottom.

Tickets and early screenings

Tickets for IMAX and other premium formats went on sale Tuesday, with the company positioning the film as a must‑see on the biggest screens. Warner Bros. also rolled out fresh promotional footage — more of a high‑impact TV spot than a full trailer — designed to spotlight the IMAX experience.

  • IMAX‑exclusive expanded footage: 71 minutes (1.90:1)
  • Select locations will feature sequences in 1.43:1 (IMAX with Laser and IMAX 70mm film)
  • Shot with both IMAX Film Cameras and IMAX‑certified digital cameras
  • Limited early IMAX shows begin December 14
  • General theatrical release: December 18

The studio is also scheduling special limited IMAX engagements starting December 14, a few days ahead of the film’s wide opening on December 18.
