Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is stirring a travel boom in Sicily thanks to its Ithaca filming locations — but how big could the tourism windfall be?

On Favignana—the largest of Sicily’s Egadi Islands—locals already have a name for what’s happening since Christopher Nolan brought his crew there: the “Nolan effect.” Early forecasts say the island, which doubled as Ithaca for Nolan’s The Odyssey , could pull in $287 million in tourism over the next three years, with even bigger money on the horizon.

Nolan and production designer Ruth De Jong leaned hard into the island’s jagged coastline and secluded coves, turning the centuries-old Castello di Santa Caterina into a piece of Greek myth. Even before the movie opened, travel campaigns and Airbnb listings started pitching Favignana to film fans, and local officials began comparing the island’s rising profile to the “White Lotus” bump other Sicilian spots enjoyed.

Projections push Favignana’s windfall beyond $500 million over time.

At the box office

Released July 17 as Nolan’s first feature since Oppenheimer, the movie was reportedly made for around $250 million and sprinted to $727 million worldwide in just 12 days. It also sets a technical milestone as the first feature shot entirely with IMAX 70mm cameras.

Nolan’s take reimagines Homer’s epic with his signature time-bending structure, following Odysseus on a decade-long journey home after the fall of Troy.

IMAX ticket sales alone have piled up to $140 million so far.
