A famed director has finished the script for his final film—and he’s stepping back for family time before deciding what comes next.

On The Graham Norton Show, Quentin Tarantino said his script for what he’s long billed as his tenth and final movie is done — but he’s not racing to make it. First up: a detour to the stage, plus some time away from the camera.

“I’ve written a script that I could do, that I really really like, but I have to do the play and see who I am.”
“I’ll finish the play, and then I’ll go back and be with my family for a while and then live, and then see what that guy wants to do.”

West End first

Tarantino is writing and directing The Popinjay Cavalier, a swashbuckling comedy led by Sacha Baron Cohen. He said it started life as a screenplay before he realized it worked better as a play, and he’s keeping plot details under wraps for now.

About that “final film ”

The director has treated “ten and out” like a finish line for years, which is why each new project feels like a possible curtain call. His most recent attempt at a farewell, The Movie Critic, was abandoned in 2024. The 1977- set film had Brad Pitt attached, was close to production, and had secured a $20 million state tax incentive. Tarantino later said he lost interest during prep, noting that rebuilding a vintage Los Angeles felt repetitive after Once Upon a Time in Hollywood , among other reasons.

In the meantime, his writing is headed to the screen in The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth — a Once Upon a Time in Hollywood follow-up directed by David Fincher and starring Pitt — with Tarantino staying off the director’s chair this time.

  • Tenth film: Script is finished, but Tarantino hasn’t shared a production timeline or title.
  • The Popinjay Cavalier: Previews start February 23, 2027 at London’s Phoenix Theatre; opening night is March 18, with the run scheduled to close in June 2027.
  • The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth: A Once Upon a Time in Hollywood follow-up directed by David Fincher and starring Brad Pitt; release timing TBA.
