Todd Howard Teases Fallout Season 3’s Influence on Future Games
Bethesda’s Todd Howard hints at Fallout season 3’s development and reveals the studio is exploring ways to weave elements from the TV series into upcoming games. With season 2 just released, cross-media plans are already taking shape.
Prime Video ’s Fallout series has just launched its second season, but Bethesda’s Todd Howard is already looking ahead. The creative force behind the franchise is considering how the next chapter of the show could shape the future of the games that started it all. Even as fans dive into the latest episodes, Howard confirms that work on season 3 is already underway.
Season 3 in the Works
Howard recently shared that the writing process for the third season has begun.
“For us on the game and TV show side, we're writing season 3 now,”
he told Variety. What’s especially intriguing is the ongoing conversation between the show’s writers and Bethesda about how to blend new TV elements into the game universe.
He explained,
“We're having those conversations now of, what are we doing in season 3 for the TV show, and what elements can we bring into our games at that time when it comes out that don't feel forced or fake.”
This kind of collaboration isn’t new for the franchise. Earlier this year, Fallout 76’s Burning Springs expansion introduced Walton Goggins’ The Ghoul, a character straight from the streaming series, showing how the two mediums can influence each other.
Game Updates and Remasters
While fans might hope for sweeping changes in classic titles, Howard is realistic about what’s possible. There’s talk of a Fallout 3 remaster, but he doubts Bethesda would add entirely new storylines to a game that’s nearly two decades old. The studio’s approach to The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered suggests they’re more likely to focus on technical upgrades than narrative overhauls.
As for the possibility of a major crossover in the next mainline entry, Fallout 5, Howard urges patience. He’s previously mentioned that developing a new installment takes about five years, and right now, the team is fully committed to The Elder Scrolls 6. That means it could be quite a while before fans see how the TV show’s influence plays out in a brand-new game.
Cross-Media Collaboration
The ongoing dialogue between Bethesda and the Fallout TV show’s creative team signals a new era for the franchise. By carefully selecting which elements to bring over, they hope to create a seamless experience that feels authentic to both longtime players and new viewers. The goal is to avoid anything that seems out of place or forced, ensuring that each addition enhances the world rather than detracts from it.
With season 3 already in development and the games team actively involved, the future of Fallout looks more interconnected than ever. Fans can look forward to seeing how this cross-media approach shapes the next wave of stories in both the digital wasteland and on screen.
