Why Kelly Clarkson's Kids' Friends Won't Stop Calling Her by Her Full Name
Kelly Clarkson says her kids’ friends treat school pickup like a red carpet, skipping River or Remy’s mom to greet her by full name—every single time.
Kids say the darndest things, especially when your mom is a pop star with a talk show. On her latest episode, Kelly Clarkson explained why she keeps hearing her full government name like she just won Final Jeopardy.
'Hi, Kelly Clarkson'
On the Tuesday, May 12 episode of her talk show, Clarkson said her kids friends never call her River or Remy’s mom. They go straight to the full thing, every time, like it ’s a bit.
"They’ll be like, 'Hi, Kelly Clarkson.' They’ll say my full name every time like it’s a game show."
Guest Jenna Bush Hager fessed up that she does it too. She even pointed out she doesn’t do that with her own colleagues on Today — Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb don’t get the full-name treatment from her — but somehow Kelly does.
Clarkson joked she hasn’t reached single-name status yet — we’re talking Cher or Mariah territory — and Bush Hager argued the real problem is there are just too many Kellys. Clarkson ran with it, ticking off the famous ones (Kelly Rowland, Kelly Price) and then roasting her own generation’s name trend by saying basically every cocktail waitress in the 80s got the name too.
The family picture, right now
Clarkson is mom to daughter River, 11, and son Remy, 9. She shares them with her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, who, as reported, died in August 2025 after a private battle with cancer at 48. Earlier this year, she talked about how the kids have been leaning on each other — and her — through a lot of change.
In a January backstage Q&A, Clarkson said they’re at that sweet spot where they can handle their own business but still want to cuddle. With everything the family has been dealing with, she has been letting the kids crash in her bed a lot. Picture it: two dogs, two kids, and Kelly. Chaotic, but in a cozy, we-needed-this way. She said the late-night talks that come out of that have basically become her favorite part of the day.
River hits the set
The show has always been a family affair, and the kids have popped up on camera over the years. In April, River went fully behind the scenes, headset and all, for a quick crew cameo. Clarkson saw her daughter on the floor and practically melted, calling her a little mini producer and loving every second of it.
Why the show is ending
Back in February, Clarkson announced her talk show will wrap after seven seasons. She said the timing will make sense to most people given how much her family dynamic has shifted recently, and she sounded very clear-eyed about choosing what matters.
"Our family life, the dynamic changed a bit... it’s one of those things when you kinda start seeing life with how it is precious, too."
Catch-up at a glance
- January: In a backstage Q&A, Clarkson shares that her 9- and 11-year-olds have been bunking with her a lot lately — dogs included — and that the bedtime chats have become a daily highlight.
- February: She announces The Kelly Clarkson Show will end after seven seasons, citing major life changes and a shift in priorities during an appearance on Today.
- April: River pops up on set with a mic for a blink-and-you-miss-it crew cameo, which Clarkson adores.
- May 12 (Tuesday): On her show, Clarkson laughs about kids — her own and their friends — insisting on calling her "Kelly Clarkson," while Jenna Bush Hager admits she does it too.
It’s a very Kelly blend right now: jokes about celebrity-name physics, a kid grabbing a headset, and a mom narrowing her focus to what feels good and what matters. Also, yes — if you see her in public, she’s probably answering to "Kelly Clarkson."
