A chilling new comic prequel, 'Sleepy Hollow: The Witches of the Western Wood,' arrives May 6, unraveling the mysterious past of Lady Mary Van Tassel and her sinister bond with the Headless Horseman.

Nearly three decades after Tim Burton and Johnny Depp brought their haunting vision of Sleepy Hollow to the big screen, the story is set to expand in a way no one saw coming. The original film, which debuted on November 19, 1999, followed Ichabod Crane as he investigated a string of gruesome murders in a small New York village. Over time, the movie has become a cult favorite, celebrated as one of the most memorable collaborations between Burton and Depp.

This spring, fans will get to revisit that eerie world with the launch of a brand-new comic book prequel. IDW Publishing is set to release the first issue of 'Sleepy Hollow: The Witches of the Western Wood' on May 6, under their IDW Dark label. The five-part series will peel back the layers on Lady Mary Van Tassel’s mysterious beginnings and her fateful link to the infamous Headless Horseman. Moviegoers will remember Miranda Richardson’s chilling portrayal of Van Tassel, whose deadly schemes ultimately led to her being dragged to the underworld by the Hessian after her plans unraveled.

Unveiling the Witch’s Secret Past

Written by Delilah S. Dawson and illustrated by Jose Jaro, the comic promises to take readers deep into the shadows of Sleepy Hollow’s past. Dawson, a longtime admirer of both the film and Burton’s unique style, shared her excitement about exploring this dark universe:

"I've been a fan of Sleepy Hollow since I saw it in the theater in 1999 and a fan of Tim Burton since Pee Wee's Big Adventure, so getting to play in a world as dark and whimsical as I am has been an absolute treat. I once had a lucid dream in the witch cave while falling asleep to the movie, which now almost feels like a portent of what was to come; this world lives in my bones. Prepare yourself to learn the secret history of Lady Van Tassel and her relationship with the Horseman — if you dare."

The new series will transport readers to a time before Lady Van Tassel became the villain audiences know. Back then, she was Sarah Archer, enduring hardship and neglect alongside her twin sister. Her journey into witchcraft begins after a fateful encounter with the Hessian at the moment of his beheading, igniting a dark power within her and setting her on a path of vengeance.

Pushing the Boundaries of Horror

This prequel follows last year’s sequel comic, 'Return to Sleepy Hollow,' which picked up the story 15 years after the film’s events. Now, 'The Witches of the Western Wood' takes a step back, delving into the origins of its most enigmatic characters. According to the official synopsis, Sarah’s brush with the supernatural gives her the strength to confront those who wronged her, transforming her into a formidable witch.

Paramount Pictures, which holds the rights to the original film, has given its blessing for the creative team to explore even darker territory. Editor Riley Farmer explained that the studio encouraged them to dig deeper into the horror elements:

"We wanted to understand this fearsome witch and the Horseman a bit better, and Paramount has been a wonderful partner in doing so — allowing us to push the story to be darker and more horrific than anything Sleepy Hollow has seen before,"

Farmer also praised Jaro’s artwork for capturing the chilling atmosphere and gruesome details that fans crave. She teased the Horseman’s terrifying debut, promising, "heads will roll!"

Anticipation Builds for the Next Chapter

Pre-orders for the first issue of 'Sleepy Hollow: The Witches of the Western Wood' are open until March 30, with the comic set to hit shelves on May 6. As anticipation grows, longtime fans and newcomers alike are eager to discover the untold story behind one of horror’s most iconic witches and her deadly alliance with the Headless Horseman.
