Eric Winter Hints at Chenford Endgame After The Rookie Season 8 Kidnapping
At the 2026 Disney Upfront in New York City on Tuesday, May 12, The Rookie star Eric Winter told Us Weekly he’s hoping Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen — aka Chenford — make it back safely after season 8’s kidnapping cliffhanger.
Chenford fans, take a breath. The Rookie ended season 8 by yanking the rug right after giving everyone the moment they wanted, and now the people in charge are teasing what comes next. Eric Winter (Tim Bradford) is hopeful. Showrunner Alexi Hawley is gleefully ominous. And yes, there is talk of a wedding... with a very big if.
Where we left them (and why everyone is yelling)
- Season 8 finale aired May 4: Tim proposed to Lucy ( Melissa O'Neil) on the beach after they helped bring down recurring menace Heath Everett (Jeffrey Vincent Parise). She said yes.
- Seconds later, a man and a woman walked up, jabbed them with something, and abducted both of them. The last shot was Tim and Lucy reaching for each other's hands as they were taken.
- The attackers were working for Everett, who has held a long-running grudge against Tim. So no, that beef is not over.
- Relationship timeline refresher: they split before season 7, rekindled during season 7 (Tim even asked her to move in during the finale, but she was asleep and missed it ), and were fully back together when season 8 kicked off.
What Eric Winter wants from season 9
At the 2026 Disney Upfront in New York City on Tuesday, May 12, Winter, 49, told Us Weekly he is pulling for a safe return for both Tim and Lucy. When the new season starts, he wants to actually see how Tim processes what just happened and how the team rallies to get them back. In short: the rescue, the recovery, and the relationship all matter.
He also would prefer this engagement not end in trauma. After finally getting that beach proposal, he thinks it would be great if the couple makes it out in one piece and keeps building. His hope for season 9 romance- wise: keep it grounded, keep it evolving, and do not rush it just to say you did.
What the showrunner is teasing (translation: pain first)
Hawley told TVLine he meant to whiplash everyone: pure joy, then immediate fallout. Where are Tim and Lucy now? He would not commit beyond saying it could be a dungeon... or something that feels like one. The point is: they are stuck, together, and it will not be cozy.
He also said next season puts them in new territory as a couple, which tracks given they only recently found their footing again. In the writers room, there was back-and-forth about kidnapping just one of them versus both, but Hawley landed on taking them together because it is both more maddening and more satisfying for the story.
The big carrot
"As long as everybody survives, there is a wedding."
That is Hawley again, also to TVLine, dangling the happiest of endgames with one huge caveat. He added that the team has not started writing season 9 yet and he has not mapped the season, but watching Tim and Lucy endure captivity together is, in his words, going to be dramatic and interesting. Translation: angst now, vows later... assuming they both make it.
Bottom line
The show just pulled off the oldest TV trick in the book: give the ship everything, then immediately blow it up. Winter wants the rescue and the relationship growth. Hawley is promising danger, some dark rooms, and a potential trip down the aisle if they survive. Classic The Rookie move.
