Lena Dunham toasted 40 a night early at West Village hotspot Via Carota, packing the room with A-listers led by Taylor Swift on Tuesday.

File this under: birthday dinners that accidentally turn into a red-carpet roll call. Lena Dunham rang in 40 with a low-key, very not-low-key pre-birthday dinner in the West Village, and yes, Taylor Swift was there. The whole thing played like a Tuesday-night flex at Via Carota, one day before Lena actually hit the big 4-0.

The dinner, the guest list, the little weird details

They gathered at Via Carota in NYC's West Village on Tuesday, May 12, which means Lena officially turns 40 on May 13. Andrew Rannells helpfully documented the night on Instagram Stories, including a group shot that did some heavy lifting for everyone’s clout. His birthday note to Lena was sweet too, calling out her kindness and talent and how lucky he feels to be her friend.

'Thank you for taking this picture ... so I can seem cool for the kids.'

  • Taylor Swift, 36, headlined the guest list. She wore Retrofete's Devika Knit Dress (priced at $217), a black Dior bag, and pointed-toe Gucci slingback heels, plus her staple crimson lip.
  • Lena Dunham, the birthday girl, showed up in a purple off-the-shoulder blouse, black capris, and a sparkly 'happy birthday' tiara. She left carrying a pink lava lamp, which honestly might be the most Lena party favor imaginable.
  • Andrew Rannells, 47, took the group pic and posted the tribute, because of course he did.
  • Luis Felber, Lena's husband, was there, as was French filmmaker Romain Gavras.
  • Emily Ratajkowski rolled in wearing a brown dress with white polka dots and bright red ankle boots. She also starred in Lena's 2025 Netflix show 'Too Much,' so consider this a mini cast reunion.

Lena and Taylor, in Lena's own words

If you are wondering how close these two actually are, Lena spelled it out in her second memoir, 'Famesick,' which dropped in April. She dedicated a page to Taylor that is basically a friendship mixtape in paragraph form:

'TayTay — you sing the songs I wrote this book to, the stories that pulled these stories out of me, the music that makes the whole world feel seen, and yet somehow, miraculously, you also pick up every desperate call at every desperate hour. I love you so much and forever, for the reasons that everyone does and for reasons all my own.'

Short version: the bond is real, and Lena is fiercely loyal about it.

About that Swift-Kelce wedding chatter

Since we are here: the summer wedding rumors are still humming. The talk right now is that Taylor and fiance Travis Kelce are aiming for July 4th weekend in NYC. Sources told Us Weekly back in April that they have been toggling between inviting everyone and keeping it tight; as of that report, they had scaled it down. Supposedly, the inner circle already knows the where and when.

Anyway, if that happens, do not be shocked when Lena pops up on that guest list, lava lamp not included.
